David's guide probably covers this.

But, if someone is selling a Wagner for less than $100k, consider it a fake. Your odds of scoring a steal on one are next to none.

The card is a fake, waaaaaay too many red flags. Another thing, you don't even need a picture when the guy says hes selling as a REPRINT, that hints that it is one. Also it has a bin of 2.k, there is no way you will find a wagner t206 on ebay for 2.5k. Use common sense on auctions like this. The guys a fraud no matter what he says.

I know exactly what ya guys mean..I'm just wondering in conjunction with this auction if there is a good breakdown/diagram on the honus reprints/forgeries. I found a great one on Ruth's RC..Are we talking David from cycleback? If so, can't seem to find any info. on Honus repros..

Thanks

There are standard microscopic techniques for authenticating the T206 Wagner, and any T or E card for that matter. However, beyond that stuff, 99.9 percent of T206 Wagner reprints simply look bad, even in an online image. I'm not talking about Lew Lipset or an SCG grader saying a Wagner looks bad having having personally handled and graded 20 Wagners in person. I'm talking about looking bad to a collector on a $20 budget but who likes to look at the Wagners and other early cards in the MastroNet, SCP and REA auctions.

Always remember this: Excluding those unusual duel/Live eBay auctions held by major auction houses like Robert Edward Auctions, Heritage and Sotheby's, no original T206 Honus Wagner has ever been offered on eBay.

I'm not sure, but if you can tell any t206 from a fake you can tell the Wagner T206 from a fake. I would go on ebay and view graded cards. Get a picture of a T206 cobb red background, then go and search for one being sold as is or as a possible reprint. You will see a big difference.

Yes, absolutely..I'm very aware of that-but look at this guy's picture! There's no way to tell if it's legit or fake from that measley picture. Don't you hate it when these guys put up a card with some lame-foggy lookin picture and then of course it's always some high price!? I mean-at least get a picture of the back..always.

Wagner only comes with Piedmont and Sweet Cap. Only two known are Piedmont all the others Sweet Cap. It doesn't matter what he claims, this guy is a scammer.

Spirit57: Zach said that there were "too many red flags", and there are.

These red flags are not proof of the card being a reprint. They are evidence.

As an exercise, name the red flags that you see; in addition to the facts that:

this is the only item this seller is listing

the seller has five sales to date, one of which he got a negative on for selling a fake

the bidders identities are "protected" from honest persons warning the bidders about the fake card

The seller infers that there is a chance that he is selling a $100,00 card for 2.5% of its value (or less). And you are supposed to believe that.

Go ahead .....

Prove to yourself that sufficient circumstantial evidence exists to make an $85 bid = a certain loser. What other circumstantial evidence do you find?

There's two ways to look at the supposed T206 Wagners on eBay.

1) The seller has a min bid or current bid of, say, $200,000. Who in their right mind would send $200,000 to an unknown eBay seller with a feedback of 3? The word is stronger than gullible for a person who sends a Western Union of $200,000 to a stranger.

2) "The eBay Wagner is a steal at $5,000." Lew Lipset, Bill Mastro, Rob Lifson, Doug Allen and Keith Olbermann follow the cards on eBay, and at least a few are active bidders. If he thought that eBay card was real, do you think Doug Allen or Keith Olbermann would let a T206 Wagner go to someone else for $5,000? I bet Doug Allen's MastroNet spends more than $5,000 annually on cardboard boxes.

When I saw the auction, all I read was

blah blah blah blah reprint blah blah blah blah blah...etc

I didn't even get to the Polar Bear back because it was obviously a sham. I love when Hindu, broadleaf, Cycle, or completely wrong series backed Wagners show up. Obviously they're feeding on the weekend car warriors who want to be day traders.

I remember once on the beckett board a man winning a T206 wagner being sold as a reprint but all banged up etc so he thought he was getting one hell of a deal and that it may possibly be real. Of course it was not. In the description though having the poor grandfather story it said being sold as a reprint. The guy spent over 500 smackers on it. I don't understand whats going through peoples heads when they see a card being sold AS A REPRINT and still somehow think that its real and somehow the rest of the world missed this great deal.

I'm in full agreement with you guys..I guess everybody's overexcitement here is sadly fogging the original question. Again, is there a diagram or a complete description that explains the characteristic differences between a repro and an authentic Honus Wagner T206.
(Is that clear or.....)???

FAKE. No polar bear back on Wagner. The one on the left looks more real then the middle one. I see alot of ppl on eBay buying reprints its rediculous. I emailed a seller, saying its a reprint, and the info was false, but he ignored it. EASY WAY TO TELL IS THE LETTERING! T-206 under microscope looks brown!

Just read his header "T206 Wagner brought in 130k in the Sothbys auction. LOL whats Sothbys. What a joke! I havent been on ebay since it started, so I dont know if any have ever been sold on there. Ive never seen one. Maybe someone else has, but its not something you see everyday. Theres only 50-60 of them to be known. Take a look at the Nagy Wagner in the Mastro auction.

I know Spirit57 that you think that we don't hear your question, but the first two posters answered it adequately:

"it has a bin of 2.k, there is no way you will find a wagner t206 on ebay for 2.5k. Use common sense on auctions like this".

And the following posters elaborated on the description of what constitutes common sense among experienced collectors.

Edited to add:
Please consider this entire thread the "complete description and diagram" which you seek.
