Hi guys,

I am very new to vintage cards and I'm sure even sure if you consider Perez-Steele postcards to be vintage. I am looking into buying some HOF's auto of Mantle, Dimaggio, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays and Tom Seaver. But a few questions....

1. Why are they so cheap?!
2. Which year is better?
3. Which company for grading?

Thanks

I think they are cheap because they have been dismissed as a modern issue, but believe that signed ones represent a tremendous value.
As SGC doesn't grade autos, the only viable option is PSA, but for the set I collect it's a moot point- they have the best holder for this particular issue.
As far as what series is better, I'll agree with Al C. on the other thread that the Great Moments is the nicest of all of their issues. They resemble T3 Turkey Reds, and 70 of them were possible to have been signed. The first 60 are easy, the last 10 get progressively tougher until you hit the one that is nearly impossible, Richie Ashburn.

Some of my favorites from this set:

But if you are ever at a show where Mr. Bando is signing and someone brings you an item to verify and the signature looks close (and don't tell me that your signature is the exact same every time wink.gif )

You would probably assume that the signature presented to you was good. Frankly ANY of us in that situation would have probably said the signature was fine AND I wonder from what I remember of the news clip exactly what did the reporter say to the JSA rep. I wonder how much deception was said on her part as well

Rich

Jason-
In response to your question on the other board, I'd estimate about $5500-$6000 for a full set, with 70 signed and the rest unsigned.
Ashburn will be about 3K of that, Mantle/Duke/Mays 1K, Campy $500. and Williams and Mantle singles about $250-300 each.
Most of the easily signed ones can be found slabbed for about $20-$35 each, and the bulk under $100.
Unsigned ones are a few bucks each, for the most part. Better to pick them up as a set.

In another post Rich pointed out that there were 5000 issued, and the bulk of those were signed (of the ones that were possible) so there is a decent supply.
Also, while Judy Johnson was alive when his was issued, he was in the hospital on his deathbed, and unable to sign. His card is not included in the 70, as I've been told by a friend of his that he did not sign any before passing away.

Jason- very inexpensive unsigned. I'd look at somewhere like Hunt or H & S for a full set. Also, there is a dealer, Dave Dame, at Gallery of Full Steps, that has a large supply of these. He might cut you a deal.
