How do you personally rate the imperfections (I know I know Frank, they're all just beauty spots ) in terms of least desirable, and are some equal?.

Mine:

1. Missing chunk/piece of card
2. Peel - affecting more than 10% of the image on front, or 40% plus of back
3. Tear
4. Foxing/Major Staining
5. Pinhole
6. Rub (missing text on rear or small loss on front)
7. Crease
8. Rounded corners
9. Mild dirt/staining
10.Wrinkle
11.Chipping on edges

For me I am bothered most by by a rub or missing text, then pinhole and a chunk of the card gone. The others not so much. Those are the big three for me

it is all about where the imperfection is - and not the imperfection itself.

any one of those imperfections going through the players face would bother me most.

Joe,

That's a good point, it really is where the imperfection is located. Personally, as long as it looks excellent to near mint on the front of the card, I'm willing to entertain buying it if it is properly priced. So to me, the back of the card doesn't matter too much.

I have a '49 Leaf John (Honus) Wagner that looks nice in front but missing some of the print on the back because it had been glued to somebody's scrapbook.

I needed it as a filler for my collection so I bought it.

Peter

I like my cards well loved. Here is my breakdown, however:

1. Missing chunk/piece of card (#1 by far)
2. Tear
3. Peel - affecting more than 10% of the image on front, or 40% plus of back
4. Foxing/Major Staining
5. Rub (missing text on rear or small loss on front)
6. Pinhole
7. Crease
8. Mild dirt/staining
9. Wrinkle
10. Chipping on edges
11. Rounded corners

I would rearrange some of those a little bit...

1. Missing chunk/piece of card
2. Tear
3. Pinhole
4. Peel - affecting more than 10% of the image on front, or 40% plus of back
5. Foxing/Major Staining
6. Rub (missing text on rear or small loss on front)
7. Crease
8. Rounded corners
9. Mild dirt/staining
10.Wrinkle
11.Chipping on edges

good question...could be a good idea for a new Poll...

The caveat, of course, being that if it's a really scarce or expensive card that I really want, and it presents well, I'll take almost anything. That being said, I try and avoid the following at all costs, in order:

1. Missing chunk/piece of card
2. Pinhole
3. Writing (not on the list, but unless it's a postcard, I don't like writing)
4. Tear
5. Peel

I don't like the following, but will accept it in most cases:

6. Rub (on front; not such a big deal on back unless it really wrecks the printing on the back)
7. Crease

Stuff that doesn't bother me much at all:

8. Foxing/major staining
9. Rounded corners
10. Mild dirt/staining
11. Chipping on edges
12. Wrinkle

The more recent the card, the less of this that I'll accept.

-Al

I think the top three from your list are:

1. Missing piece
2. Tear
3. 10% paper loss on front.

Pinhole might make the list depending on how bad it is.

My biggest though, and not on the list, is off registration. I don't care if the corners are razor sharp, edges perfect, not a crease in sight, etc. If it's way off register I won't own it. Even being a little off register can keep me away from something, depending on what it is.

In T202's I kind of have to live with it. For some reason these cards seem plagued by registration problems in the up-and-down direction.

Another real irritant to me, not on the list, is a severe diamond cut. That would probably make the list ahead of the items I didn't mention (creases, edge chips, etc)

J

So I would say worst to tolerable would be:

1. Peel - affecting more than 10% of the image on front, or 40% plus of back
2. Missing chunk/piece of card
3. Foxing/Major Staining
4. Tear
5. Pinhole
6. Rub (missing text on rear or small loss on front)
7.Wrinkle
8.Chipping on edges
9. Mild dirt/staining
10. Crease
11. Rounded corners

RayB

Edited to agree with Joann; off registration is a turn off.

Registration is a terrific addition to the list, and would rate extremely high for myself too - probably above all else......which explains why I've owned approx. eight different 58' Jim Brown rookies, and never been happy enough to keep one! I guess it will have to be at a show that I finally settle on one, or in person at an auction house - as they never arrive with any where near the clarity of the scan/pic. used to sell them.

I have an alterior motive for the post, which I will make clear if the thread goes a decent length...

Daniel

For those of you who have seen my cards, you'll know that condition doesn't really matter lol. I wouldn't really want a skinned card though.

Joann, Daniel,
great point and I forgot about it...similar to your problems with the Brown rookie, I have found the 75Yount to be my bugaboo...

and this will be critical when I finally come to own my T200 Cubs card someday...

I really don't like paper loss!

Paper loss on the front/back of the card:
1. Tear
2. Missing chunk/piece of card
3. Peel - affecting more than 10% of the image on front, or 40% plus of back
4. Foxing/Major Staining
5. Pinhole
6. Rub (missing text on rear or small loss on front)*
7. Chipping on edges

I don't mind having:
Creases
Mild dirt/staining
Rounded corners
ect....

100/0 off center (ss or tb) is what bothers me most next to a chunk of card missing.

I cannot say which flaw is the worst without seeing the card.

depending on the rarity of the card I will take what I can get....other than that I don't like creases in the face or paper loss on the front....or the back if it affects lettering...Chunks out of cards are a no-no also....unless it's one I need. I think this card pretty much nails all 10 problems...though, after I doctor it I am hoping for a PSA8.....Maybe I can fill in the missing chunk with a Darby Chocolate Actress card...and not mention it.....although, I might have to take it back from myself...

I like pin holes in a card with no other defects. I get the card cheaper and it still looks good. For me it's all about the overall appearance rather than technical grade.

Darby Chocolates Eddie Collins...definitely RARE, not scarce.

Leon, out of interest and knowing you are approaching your nirvana give or take 20 or so cards (pure guess based on variations and such)....
How many individual cards does a type set make?
Or, in less strangled english, what is the total number of cards in your type set collection restricting to one of each issue, and inclusive of clearly accepted variations?

Just interested to imagine how many walls you could cover with them

Daniel
