I think Henrich is right, and if so it must have been against Brooklyn.

Mazerowski. I believe Mickey Mantle always said that losing that game was his worst loss not 1955,57 or 64 his other game 7 losses because he felt that the Yanks were far superior that year and outscored them big in the 7 games but still lost.

There is no way it is Mazeroski (what's with adding the W to his name?) because Dusty Rhodes hit one in the Willie Mays "catch" game in 1954, but I still think Rich is right that Henrich did it before that.

1949 Tommy Henrich, New York Yankee against Don Newcombe, Brooklyn Dodgers.

Edited to complete: Yankee pitcher Reynolds.

You can listen to Ol' Reliable hit his homerun on tape provided by MLB and John Miley of the Miley Collection. The broadcasting team is the Ol' Redhead, Red Barber, & Mel Allen: get yourself a copy and give yourself a treat. The entire series is available and the sound quality is wonderful.

Ted is going to tell you that the term "walk off homerun" wasn't in use until the late 20th century, so the answer can not be a vintage game.

Casey Stengel hit a famous WS inside the park homer. But I don't believe it was a walkoff.

Dan,
As a boy I saw Willie Stargell hit one over the right field stands at Forbes---it was quite a poke.

Wasn't Stargell one of the few men to hit an upperdeck shot at Three-Rivers?

The first grand slam in major league history was hit by this guy, with his team down by three in the bottom of the ninth. By all accounts it was a prodigious shot. Who hit this "walk-off"?

Hint: He was also the all-time home run leader 'til the Babe passed him.

"Chicken on the Hill Will" Stargell hit 4 of the 12 Upper Deck shots at 3 Rivers, the longest though belonged to Greg Luzinski. Not sure who (Frank Thomas maybe?), but someone hit one in a Home Run Contest well over 500 ft.

Some good answers to this Trivia ?

GILBERT

Good to hear from you.....your right....the term "walk-off" homer I think started with Kirk Gibson's HR
in the 1988 Dodgers vs A's World Series (WS).

It's the accepted "media buzzword" since that event, so I used it here to minimize the verbiage in my
Trivia question.
If I counted correctly, 8 of you have the correct answer. The one who most correctly answered this
quiz is Steve Murray.

But, as an avid Yankees fan.....I must disqualify him from winning the prize.....for 1st answering this
quiz with Mazeroski. Normally, Steve you'd get a 2nd chance....but, that was a "BIG NO-NO".....ha !

An interesting side note to Tommy Henrich's HR in the 9th inning of the 1st game of the 1949 WS was
the answer Casey Stengel gave the media. Until this event, Casey (in the 1923 WS, Giants vs Yankees)
had hit the previous game winning HR in WS play....."What do you think of your boy Henrich stealing
your 26-yr old record from you ?" Casey remarked...."I was nervous, I hit my HR in the 7th inning, little
Old Reliable (Tommy) did it in grand fashion in the 9th".

FOLLOW-UP TRIVIA...............

What is so significant with Casey Stengel's HR in the 1923 World Series ?

Thanks for your interest in this,

TED Z

I always thought we got one edit on these contests.

Yep, my bad, I misinterpreted the quiz. I first picked the only one that won a world series with a walk off homer. As we all know there are 13 walk off home runs winning a world series "game".

Good fun Ted. Thanks

It was an inside-the-park homer; which may be the last one so far in WS history and the legend was that he completed the homer without his spikes on.

What is so significant with Casey Stengel's HR in the 1923 World Series?

With that HR (an inside the park), he beat his future team.

Casey's HR was also preserved on film. I remember seeing it on Ken Burns's "Baseball."

It was the first of two game winning home runs Stengel hit in the 1923 Series (I looked that up).

This is true, but not the answer I'm looking for.

Did you know that Casey enjoys one of the highest career World Series BA ?

His BA = .393 and it may be the highest in Major Lge BB (for a given number of AB's).
