Default Barry Sloate Auctions Now Open for Bidding

Posted By: barrysloate

Good morning to all, and of course a happy and healthy New Year. Trust everyone had a safe one.

My current internet and telephone auction is now online for preview at www.sloateauction.com. I'm sure there are still a few little glitches to work out but we are finally up.

Bidding has already begun. There is a nice assortment of vintage cards and hope many of you find something to add to your collection.

And if you happen to see two of every image, you probably had a little too much to drink last night. Enjoy the auction, and look forward hearing from many friends and board members.

Regards,
Barry

Edited to add the preview period has mysteriously been bypassed and bidding has begun.

Thanks Phil. And I need to point out that the bidding clock that was supposed to start on Thursday has already started. Well, no need to change it, so please feel free to bid away. We're off and running.

I say we ban Barry from announcing his auctions. Now I'm not going to win a thing...

Nice selection of OJs, Barry.

Thanks Barry!

Lot #71 looks like it needs some work....I don't see a pic of the card and when you click on the auction it only shows the scan of the reverse.

Hi Dan- lot #71 needs a picture but it will be at least tomorrow before it will be up.

Let me take a moment to apologize for a few things. First, while I am very appreciative of the strong day of bidding so far, we were scheduled to open for bidding January 3. So instead of having a relaxing New Year's day I've been at the computer nonstop since this morning.

Second, we are supposed to go by 5% increments above $1000. For some reason, the increments haven't been calibrated correctly and they are still at 10%. I hope to have that corrected before the day is up.

Anybody have an aspirin?

Barry,

Your lack of puffery in the descriptions is refreshing.

Thanks Mike. I'm not a big fan of the wordy descriptions, so I like to keep it short and to the point.

Barry,

One error not on your part but the 1917 Boston Store of Tris Speaker SGC put card #106 and it is #166.

All your lots are entered in our system so they are showing it to all the members as well as alerting anyone who has them on their Want Lists.

Barry, great looking stuff I will enjoy bidding. Looks like you might have to pay up on that $1 dollar bet we made over dinner “Randall Duke” that Ed Delahanty wouldn’t break 5 figures he’s already at 6k+, super card too IMO!

Also for the record Mike and I have sent multiple emails now asking you to end a few auctions early, did you get them…besides pretty much all we collect now is Sloate auction cards…

Good luck with the auction.

I bid on a card described as resplendent, just because I don't think I own any resplendent cards.

John- I also find it fascinating how much early bidding is coming in. It's like running a marathon as if it were a hundred yard dash. You have to save a little for the end.

But that said, no complaints, and thanks to all.

Barry- We are going to run a marathon. We will sprint the first mile. We will take a cab the next 25 miles...then the last .2 miles we will sprint again. You can basically go on vacation the next 2 1/2 weeks.....Good luck with everything....and yes, my 20 or so bids didn't stay high for even 8 hours....best regards

That was always my theory about the marathon- why run 26 miles when you can just take the car!

I have always thought this is the best time of the year to have auctions -- those that are on the bonus plan often recieve them shortly before Christmas or right after the December 31st closing of the books. I think some people could be eager right now.

On the other hand REA and Mastro have their big auctions in April when some (Me) are looking under every seat cushion in the house, clearing every bank acount, and working accounts receivables to make that tax payment (hopefully this year my quartely payments have been a little more realistic but I doubt it -- same ole scamble).

I absolutely agree that January is the best month for an auction. Then comes February then March etc.

Bonus checks come at year end, I set my card budget for the coming year and I spend like crazy until July or August when I run out of money.

I may even put in a bid on certain of your cards Barry.

Jim

Despite all the talk about how well prices do on eBay, I've noticed with regard to OJs, at least, that Barry's cards are going to far outstrip the prices realized on the 'bay.

Bob - I think it's a solid fact that cards at public auctions houses sell for more then they do on ebay; sometimes incredibly more for the same card.

I've been selling a lot of lower grade OJ's on ebay lately and the prices are mixed. Most go anywhere from a little below average to a little better than expected, and every so often a couple go way higher than expected. So overall I think they have been doing fairly well.

The ones in my catalog are generally higher grade or hall of famers, so it is difficult for me to compare.

Hey Barry, your auction hasnt been coming up for about the last hour, maybe more but i tried once at 12 and then again just now. Does your website go to sleep around midnight every night or does it wait for you to fall asleep and then go out on the town on its own? You might want to check up on it throughout the night, its doing you a great disjustice(copyright Rhett Yeakley).
