Default A note about tonight's LOTG "Ringside" Auction

Hi Everyone:

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

Just a quick note about the Love of the Game "Ringside" auction that closes tonight:

I DO NOT expect this auction to be open late.

The auction has fewer than 250 lots, and fewer lots mean fewer bids and fewer bidders. This means that there won't be a host of items bid on after 9PM in the extended bidding period.

There are no promises, but I will not be surprised if this auction closes well past midnight, eastern time. TO recap the rules:

• In order to bid in the auction, you must be a registered bidder. To register, visit www.loveofthegameauctions.com and click the "register" button, then fill out the form COMPLETELY. It's late, but I'll do my best to process all registrations before extended bidding begins tonight.

• The auction closes tonight at 9PM eastern, and the extended bidding period begins. In order to bid on a lot during the extended bidding period, YOU MUST HAVE A BID ON THAT LOT BEFORE THE EXTENDED BIDDING PERIOD STARTS. In other words, if you want to win something, you have to have a bid on it before 9PM tonight.

• The auction remains open until no item in it has received a bid for 15 minutes. The entire auction closes at once.

Again, I do not expect this auction to be open late. It may well close before 11. If you're interested in bidding, please don't get shut out because you logged in too late - be sure to bid early. I also strongly encourage you to use the "max bid" feature if you don't intend to stay close to the computer tonight.

Thanks, and good luck!
-Al

Default Boxing Auction

That was a fun auction. I hope y'all have another one next year. I ended up with an n174 Paddy Ryan and the T218 Tolstoi Gans and Jeffries. I have a lesser grade dupe of the Jeffries that I would like to trade when I can find it. It's in a box somewhere. Anyway, I thought the prices were strong, at least on the stuff I was looking at.

It was fun, and I won some nice items. I didn't realize it was one of those auctions that keeps resetting the clock until no more bids are received. That went really late for anyone on the east coast. When did it close?

I had consigned the 1960s - 1970s Panini boxing cards which were in the auction - most went for less than I expected, and some were far less.

Al did well to try and promote the auction, but for some of these cards which don't have a huge following, an auction format can be difficult to maximize prices if it doesn't reach just the right buyers.

For example, the '66 Liston PSA 9 has sold for $150 - $175 in the past year, but had only a single bidder at $50. The '73 VIP card of Ali / Frazier in PSA 8 sold for only $35, whereas PSA 5's has sold for $70 - $90 in the past year.

So, not thrilled with the results on my items, though many of the other items (most of the Jack Johnson cards) appeared to have strong results.

Nice pick ups Brent. I was outbid on a number of things that I wanted, but did get the Jack Johnson Casanova card. Had wanted that one for awhile, though I had to pay about twice as much as I thought. I really enjoyed the auction. Quite fun and I like the idea.

Nice auction fellas. For anybody worried about the slightly higher buyers premium fee for CC or Paypal payments, it's more then made up for by the very reasonable S&H charges.

Just got my invoice, and I picked up some decent sized group lots. I would have expected to get banged for at least 3-4 times as much on shipping charged from most of the bigger auction houses. At least!

Hope it was worth your time to run these types of boxing auctions again.

We slugged it out on that one Peter

I got very little. The 1897 Fitzsimmons-Corbett coins, a French Sugar Ray Robinson card, and the Singleton & Cole Jack Johnson

Yeah I was wondering if somebody from the boards was on the other end of that bidding war. It's definitely a nice piece that I was happy to pick up.

By the way, thanks for all your contributions of time and knowledge that helped make this auction a reality.

Should we just post here what we picked up at LOTG boxing auction, or should we just put them under the recent pick-ups? Any preference? And has anyone received their winnings yet?

I guess we could. I'll post something I won, but haven't received yet. Anyone have an opinion about getting it graded? Will it grade with a number grade or just authentic? Which TPG is my best bet to get this oversized cabinet graded? Sorry for all the questions!

I wouldn't bother grading something like that. To me it's really cool in the old frame.

Or I'll ask the question another way.
Would this look better on my wall as-is or in one of those cheap plastic "floating" frames from Michaels?

If you like the modern frames better, grading might be the way to go.

I like the framing ok, but I worry about the acidity of the matting. Plus, I really don't plan on hanging it up anyway, so I will likely get it graded. But I appreciate your comments though.

I'm not seeing any matting. The cloth bit is inside the cardboard frame with a backing just the way stevengraphs were made. Looks like just a bit of paper tape holding it in the frame.

Either way it's a really cool thing.

Does anybody grade Stevensgraphs? I imagine it would be an "Authentic" if so...........as would most existing Stevensgraphs.
