Default Mantle sign - period sign or not?

I've attached a photo of a wood sign that I recently bought. It is 33-1/2 inches long and 13-1/2 inches high. It is allegedly from the '50s or '60s. The person I bought it from said he's had it for 25 years. I doubt it is a period piece simply because I don't think any store would make a sign like that and only be able to use it one day. Wouldn't they have an actual date on it so it could hang in the store for multiple days? Anyway, is there anyone in the New York area who can remember Mantle making appearances in any area department store? Is that something he actually did? I did a search on available New York newspapers to see if I could find an advertisement regarding Mantle's appearance at a department store but came up empty. I really like the sign whether it's a period piece or not and didn't pay too much for it, so all is good regardless.

Fantasy piece, but kind of cool. I remember seeing signs like these featuring Ruth, Wagner, etc., at shows some years ago, all done in the same wood faux-old style, and my impression is that they weren't done to fool people, just nice fantasy pieces for the man cave, but I could be wrong about the intentions behind them. Anyone know who did these?
