Default 1954 Dan Dee

In addition to the thousand sets I'm slowly building, I like to pick up type cards from new issues when I see them cheap. I got Walker Cooper at a show for $12 on a whim a few months ago, and was pleasantly surprised to recently see it's listed as a tough SP in my copy of the Standard Catalog, and the second priciest card behind the Mantle. Since then I've picked up Frank Thomas (that makes 2 of the 3 designated SP's) and a couple Hall of Famers (Wynn and Doby). I guess this means I'm starting another set.

I'm a low-grade collector, so the gross greasy stains on all the cards isn't an issue. The waxy surface feel is a bit unusual, and the design a lot like the Johnston cookies 53/55 sets. Anyone collect this set? How tough are the Short Prints, or are the catalogs misleading? Anyone have or have a photo of an unopened bag? The cards were clearly in direct contact with the chips. Any favorite cards or oddities?

You know what they say, if at first a post completely fails just come back to it years later and expect different results. Very slowly making progress as I pick through other higher priorities. Scored Max Surkont here for only $5 shipped in pretty normal condition for the issue.

Still enjoy this set, pretty confident the SP's are overstated or imaginary by now. POP report suggests the individual experience isn't a biased sample.

Default Fun!

I don’t collect these myself, mostly because my man Mays isn’t in the set. But it looks like you’re making good progress and having fun with it.

Good on you, mate!

I don't own any Dan Dee Potato Chip cards, but have considered pulling the trigger on the Monte Irvin.

3 of the stars, bought at a local show today for $100. Since Mays isn't in it, the aforementioned Monte Irvin, as the only Giant in the set, is the coolest of the Dan Dee's.

I really want to see what a sheet of these looked like. 29 cards is a prime number that should make for some DP's and SP's on a sheet; but the POP reports and experience suggest to me that the alleged Smith and Cooper SP's are not real. Something interesting was probably done but I don't know what that was.
