Default 1948 Bowman Basketball "Over-cut" card

I have in my possession a 1948 Bowman basketball card -- #39 Ray Kuka. I have had this card for over 30 years handed down from my Dad from his collection.

This particular card has a weird cut. Almost an "over" cut. I am attaching a link to a pic of the front and back of this card. Have you ever seen anything like this in any of the others from the 1948 set? Seems like it was almost miss-cut by hand.

Thoughts?

I have quite a few 48 bowmans and have a bit of knowledge on the set.

There is a seemingly large amount of hand cut examples out there of this issue. It is rumored that quite a few sheets may have been given to Philadelphia kids near the factory or taken from the trash. This also is rumored to be the source of the many grey background cards as well.

The hand cuts are why so many authentic Mikan rookies are out there as they are sheet cuts.

Well said Justin.....if this were a T206 card, it would be called "scrap" but do not let that name fool you. A lot of the hand cut 1948s were in fact grey backgrounds. This is one of the few that I have seen that is larger than a full card and hand cut with all the full colors. Very cool card!

Peace, Mike

Thanks everyone for the info!!

My Dad grew up in a small suburb right outside of Philly so it is possible he was able to get a hand cut card. Although he would have been 4 years old in 1948. His collection that was not thrown out contains multiple cards (mostly baseball and football) from 1952 to 56 that is why this single 1948 basketball card always puzzled me. Great to have more of the back story
