Default The Say Hey Kid

I'd post a card of Willie, but every one I own is already posted ... so I'll offer a recollection: When I was nine, I discovered baseball. One of the first games I watched was on TV and one of the first memorable defensive plays I ever saw involved Willie. He was 39 at the time. The Reds' Bobby Tolan hit a ball deep right-center. Both Willie and rightfielder Bobby Bonds went after the ball. In mid-air and up against the fence, the two players collided. Willie was knocked out, but he held the ball ...

By the way, Clint, here's a quote from HOF rightfielder Harry Hooper, who played next to Tris Speaker on several championship teams, "Mays was the best outfielder ever ..."

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Ty Cobb, maybe all the Cobb fanatics are on the vintage board.

I'm new here, but I have read these boards for several months. Mays sure was a great player. I wonder how he would fare today against the average pitching and suspect defense that most teams have? Pretty well, I'd say!

2 beauties, Dennis. Much nicer than my two of the same. Especially my '62, which overall (my '62s in general) seem to show more wear on the corners and sides overall than my other sets. Or maybe it's just it stands out more on the wood border style.

Great stuff, Marty! I'm always delighted at all the esoteric stuff that gets posted here, and the idea that someone (or more than one) would have the prescence of mind and forethought to hang on to that milk carton all these years. I noticed that the picture of Maz is the same one that's on the '61 Kahn's.
