Are we mixing jazz and rock (Mingus reference)? I'll play and I will stick to rock:

Guitar: Jimi Hendrix
Guitar: Eric Clapton
Bass: John Entwistle
Drums: Charlie Watts
Vocals: Grace Slick

There are so many others in every category but I'll keep it simple.

Well, I'm gonna go a different route. One that I always take with my fantasy baseball teams too. I love the multi-positional guys, so I'm gonna go with a bunch of multi-instrumentalists here, who all happen to be incredible songwriters and vocalists from different eras and/or genres, to allow the band to touch on nearly all styles of music.. While limiting their labeling to "main instruments", Piano and other assorted instruments will also be available to my "fantasy band". The fact that most members play all instruments, will also allow them to fill in any gaps and make up for any stylistic shortcomings of the others in the songwriting process. There will also be a lot of "natural variation" in vocal styles and tones, to create nearly unheard of harmonies..

Guitar 1: Prince(great guitar player, vocalist, songwriter, played all instruments on first 5 albums, reportedly plays 27 instruments).
Guitar 2: John Mayer(I'm not even a fan, but he is a pretty good songwriter, solid vocalist, and one hell of a guitar player)
Bass:Paul McCatney(jack of all trades, great vocalist and songwriter)
Drumsave Grohl(jack of all trades, great vocalist and songwriter)
Vocals:Mike Patton(possibly the most diverse vocalist ever, can sing multiple languages and styles. Probably one of the best at using vocals as an instrument, also great with electronic programming)

Alternate guitar player:Phil Keaggy

Fantasy:

So many combinations that would be amazing!

Guitar- Peter Frampton!
Guitar- Gary Richrath (REO Speedwagon)
Bass - Geddy Lee (Rush)
Keyboards- Richard Wright (Pink Floyd)
Drums - Neil Peart (Rush),
Drums -Keith Moon (The Who)

Kinda surprised that I haven't seen Stevie Ray Vaughn mentioned.
Or Buddy Miles although I'm kinda partial to a very underrated, finesse (sic) drummer in Carl Palmer.

Since it's fantasy, I suppose I could put people who would have never worked together, but might have done amazing things.
Guitar-
Hendrix
Segovia

A bunch of "second choices" Vaughn, Trower, Van Halen, Rhodes, Harrison (sounds so simple until you see the tab my hands won't even do most of those chords if I use the other hand to place the fingers), Clapton - same as Harrison, especially white room.

Hendrix probably would have been all for it, but from all I've read Segovia detested anything but classical.

Bass - Tough call, I'm not really up on bass players. Maybe Geezer Butler.

Drums - Heck, maybe Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich. can't go with all hard rock guys.

Barry, I can remember so many of those super-bands that ended up just being someone's failed fantasy - Asia and the Firm for instance. What let-downs.

There was "Super Session" Kooper, Bloomfield, Stills. Man I wore several copies of that lp out in 68.

Always liked Paul Butterfield too, (he was waaaay under rated).

Default Gee, do you think there would be any ego clashes?

Drums - John Bohnam
Bass (and vocals) - Les Claypool
Guitar - Yngwie Malmsteen
Guitar (and vocals) - Jimi Hendrix
Vocals - Janis Joplin...with Jimi and Les, this band could use a female voice added to the mix.

Butterfield's best album was "East-West." I play it often.

Barry, even though I have a very abrasive personality, (you guys probably haven't noticed, (yeah right!)) I think you and I would get along very well.
If you ever make it to the Big Island, my treat for dinner. David.

Keep it simple:

Guitar, Vocals, Piano, Organ, Harmonica: Neil Young

Nobody else required.

Josh,

If the standard (drums/bass/2 guitars/singer) rock band mix is the only choice, you can find my choices listed above. If we're stepping outside of that very small box, my true dream band would begin with this:

Frank Sinatra - Vocals
Jo Stafford - vocals
Louis Armstrong - Trumpet and vocals (imagine the call-and-response with Frank and Jo)
Jo Ann Castle - Piano
Ray Charles - Organ, keyboards, and vocals
Benny Goodman - Clarinet
Gene Krupa - Drums
Tommy Dorsey - Trombone

Thanks David. I've never made it to Hawaii but you never know. And we probably do have very similar tastes in music.

We just had two of(probably) the most successful in the early 2000's. Although, I will admit that deep down, they're both(at their core) pretty much an established band with a new singer, under a new name. Not much different than Van Halen with Hagar, or Sabbath with Dio, but with a name change.

Velvet Revolver-for the most part Guns N Roses with Scott Weiland from STP.

Audioslave- for the most part Rage against the Machine with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden..

As far as "true supergroups", I'd say the Traveling Wilburys might've been one of the best. Along with CSN or CSNY.

Now, I should point out the obvious, that a lot of bands are, in a way, a supergroup. But drawn on local success(with smaller egos), that we may not be aware of on the mainstream level... One of the reasons we see a lot of bands come out with great debut albums, and then fall off a cliff, if because that first album, often times, is kind of a greatest hits. A compilation of everything these guys had written up 'til that point(both together, and pre-existing material)

This is precisely why I rarely walk in front of a mirror anymore.

I think that is her curse for being a part of Jefferson Starship.

No, but I could probably name 100.

Perhaps it's just the Doors in general I can't stand.

Most horrible lyricist ever?

Speaking of, I guess I might add Bernie Taupin to my band, just for fun, and Cynthia Plastercaster, for even more fun.
