Default SGC grading question (possible dumb question)

Posted By: anthony

Does anyone know if SGC automatically gives a certain grade to cards that have pen or pencil marks?? as in nothing higher than say 20/1.5 fair.

or is it possible to receive a higher grade?

when in doubt, keep it!

Default SGC grading question (possible dumb question)

I believe I have seen pencil marks as 30s, but not higher. If it has legible writing (such as grocery list, player stats, or personal notes), as apposed to a mark, then that seems to limit the card to a 20.

I am sure others may have better information. A grader from SGC was at the Net 54 Dinner, he sat at the table I was at and I talked to him for quiet awhile about SGC guidelines and he commented on how some very nice cards have relatively low grades because of their guidelines ...his point seemed to be "grading has relevance and value but in the end you need to buy the card not the holder."

Default SGC grading question (possible dumb question)

Anthony, never worry if you think your question is possibly dumb. My questions are amost always dumb, (and I've been in the hobby for 30 years). The great folks here will never (well, almost never) ridicule anyone for asking a "dumb" question.

It's nastiness, not lack of knowledge that's a no no. This is my favorite site on the web....and with all my diverse interests, I'm a member of dozens of forums.

Regards.

Bob

I doubt a card with a pencil mark could get better than a 30....and that's if it was ex or better...otherwise I think it would be lower. However, if you can erase the pencil mark and leave no indention, and no one can tell it was ever there....I am sure they won't downgrade for it... (a little sarcasm)......

...some SGC 40's with light pencil marks after a good erasure. The pencil is still very slightly visible. The cards would have been SGC 50's or 60's otherwise -- one was a PSA 4 (MK) before crossover.
