Phil - they look great whether in August or September!

Al & Darren - thank you, I fear the centering on some of these '61s is going to be my undoing!

I collect the AO set. The Brock looks like it was never glued into a game piece. If it is unperforated it may be an unfinished item cut from a sheet. The cards were glued down along all four sides [the white] to each other face to face so the sweepstakes player would have to tear open the packet to see whether or not he won. I saw a bunch of the unopened packets some years ago. That's why the cards are typically found with border damage from glue overspill, and why there are ten cards in the set that are just about impossible to find--they were the winning pieces and were SP and likely redeemed when they were pulled. I've only seen one of the SP cards ever offered and it appears to have been cut out of a packet at a much later date.

Default 59 Bazookas

I have been looking for the Mantle for a while and just won it as part of a small lot. If anyone needs any of the others, PM me.

Mine just arrived today. I was not expecting them to be such large cards. For some reason, I had in my mind they would be a lot smaller. Really an awesome set. Almost makes me want to try to complete the set.

Default Sept pick-ups

Dan - cool oddball "rookies"...I love the not-so-common rookie / almost-rookie cards of players!

Here's my best post-war pick-up this month, a 1948-49 Trinidad y Hno Marianao team booklet w/ Buck Leonard:

For my fellow error & variations collectors, I present my new Ryan 'missing the dot in the 'i' of his signature' pickup. Tough card to find.

ryan.jpg

Edited to add: Man, it's crazy how bad a card looks when it's blown up in a hi-res scan! In my hand, the corners look fine, but the scan makes it look all round cornery. Yowza!

Just a few notable cards I picked up out of this collection today. Got a couple more Mantle cards to add to my hoard of course. I am excited to finally have a Joe Morgan rookie

Joe Morgan was my 2nd favorite player after Lou Brock. In the 70's the Cardinals weren't much good, so Cincy kind of became a team to follow a bit and Morgan was always my favorite player on the Big Red Machine. I've been tempted over the years to put together a Morgan collection, much like my Brock collection.

We shall see, maybe someday, he certainly has plenty of cards to collect.

Similar to Brock, his trade from Houston to Cincinnati in 1971 is viewed as one of the worst, if not the worst, in Astro's history

Wasn't sure of the details so I looked it up. Thought everyone else might be interested...

November 29, 1971: Traded by the Houston Astros with Ed Armbrister, Jack Billingham, Cesar Geronimo and Denis Menke to the Cincinnati Reds for Tommy Helms, Lee May and Jimmy Stewart.

Thanks, Dan. I paid well more than a "4" price for it but consider the presentation to be more like a 5-6 so more in line with those numbers.

Great Kaline Phil! Love those cards that are in "collector grade" shape!! A little wear and tear after 59 years should be expected!! Centering should never have changed though!! And yours is spot-on!!

I too am curious about the Skowron Adam. Any more info?

Moose played for the Austin Packers before signing with the Yankees, and is sort of a legend there--about 50 miles from where I grew up. Austin is the home of Hormel (faintly indicated on back of premium), and boasts the Spam Museum if you are ever in the neighborhood.

Thanks Colby. I've finished out most of the mainstream Mantles and have really enjoyed grabbing these oddballs. Do you collect the postcards as well? Would love to trade notes on them with someone. SCD said there were 8 Mantles but I have not been able to identify one of them.

Nice Chris, I've always liked those All-Americans.

This one just arrived & was tough for me to find in good condition with good centering, down to 18 for my set.

Some of these were purchased in August but they came back from SGC this month.

Was a KSA 2.

Hoping for a 3, but happy with the grade considering what I paid.

I felt that this was a decent 5.

I have been working on a '57 Topps baseball set. I went to a card show near home and, after not finding much in the way of '57s, i found a '59 Topps starter set in a binder--414/572 at a price I couldn't refuse! The condition is a notch below what I might usually do, but I'd say it averages out vgex I am pumped! It won't take too much time to round out this set. Unexpected but great!

Managed to pick up a complete issue. Not the best pictures of the cards, but they seem to be in good shape.

Ben--I think you should complete both sets in offsets

Putting a complete set together of offsets would be harder than the T206 set. I actively look for the print offset cards and I usually have to look at several 1000 cards just to find 1.

I like it when people say "Do you really collect that junk?". I always say yes I do and since you call it junk may I please have yours.
