Default Happy Nate Colbert Day! 5 HR & 13 RBI on 8-1-72

I am the five-time defending "Nate Colbert Master Set Collector" champion in the PSA Registry, so today is an important day. (..or at least to me, it is!)

Today is the anniversary of Nate Colbert's 5 HR, 13 RBI 1972 doubleheader in Atlanta.

Game One

1st AB Home Run (3 RBI)
2nd AB Single (1 RBI)
3rd AB Single
4th AB Home Run (1 RBI)
5th AB Called out on strikes (obviously a bad call)

Game Two

1st AB Walked
2nd AB Home Run (Grand Slam 4 RBI)
3rd AB Ground Out
4th AB Home Run (2 RBI)
5th AB Home Run (2 RBI)

Stan Musial also hit 5 home runs in a double header in 1954 and Nate and his father were in attendance at that game.

The Padres were awful in 1972 (and most other years), but that year Nate accounted for almost 33% of the team's entire offense.

Nate was a coach for Reno, a Padres Class A team, when I played in the California League in 1986. He was one of the most approachable guys I ever met in the game, and he loved to talk hitting, even if you were a player on an opposing team. At the time I knew of his huge day thanks to his "Turn Back the Clock" card from Topps' 1977 set. I never asked him about that day, and I've always regretted it.

Default Oh, I Remember Nate Colbert...

as a Tigers fan I was thrilled when we acquired him in 1975. He was one of the biggest disappointments in Detroit history. In 45 games, 156 AB, he hit 4 home runs and batted an anemic .147. Yep that's not a typo, .147. The Tigers shipped him to Montreal where he turned it around in the second half of '75 and batted a rousing .173, again with 4 HRs.

Good to see you're not bitter.
