Default SMR Article - 1971-72 Fleer Harlem Globetrotters Set (Set of 84)

Hello everyone,

Hope you are well.

I'm writing an article for SMR magazine that discusses the 1971-72 Fleer (Set of 84) Harlem Globetrotters set. I was wondering if anyone out there has any information about the packs these cards were released in:

1) How many cards were in each pack?

2) How were widely were these distributed in 1971-72? Were they for sale right across the country?

3) How popular were these cards when they were initially released?

Thanks for any help and memories you can provide.

Sincerely,

Kevin Glew

Default From the past....

Found this info that was once posted here many years ago:

Fleer issued a set of 84 Harlem Globetrotters cards in wax packs in 1971-72. These cards are numbered on the back as 1 of 84, 2 of 84, etc. Fleer also issued a set of 28 Globetrotters cards in 1971-72 that were inserted in 4-card cello wrapped packs in boxes of Coco-Puffs cereal. These cards are numbered on the back as 1 of 28, 2 of 28 etc. These cards also have Coco-Puffs on the back whereas the standard Fleer issue does not mention Coco-Puffs on the back. Both sets printed by Fleer. The Coco-Puffs cards are a little more difficult to find than the standard Fleer cards.

Peace, mike

Hi Kevin -

You probably already have seen these, but I pulled my album out and you can see the wrapper along with the team sticker that was included in each pack. The Globetrotters got some big exposure in the early 70s that was helped by the cartoon show, and of course the Scooby Doo episode! Good luck with your article!
