Default T202 -- Red back ink v. Black

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman

Was there any reason as to why some of the cards have backs in black ink versus red? And is either of the backs rarer than the other?

Default T202 -- Red back ink v. Black

Posted By: Brian H (misunderestimated)

Jeff -
I don't know why some are black and some red but I am fairly confident that the red is less common. I have never seen any disparity in terms of price/value between the two colors. I think Lee Behrens can give you some data that backs up the relative scarcity of the two backs -- it likely has to do with which factory produced them as I recall (I guess that's sort of a reason.)

Black ink outnumbers red ink by about 6 to 1 from my sampling. There are 2 different factory designations of which one is found in black and red.

Default T202 -- Red back ink v. Black

Posted By: Geno

There are actually three different backs - Black Factory 649, Red Factory 30, and Black Factory 30. The Black 30s are by far the hardest, and I'm not sure if they exist for each card. My guess is that they do, but not knowing how they were produced means I can't really confirm it. I do have one card with all three backs, so I know that is possible. As far as cost premiums, I don't think there is one since nobody but a few goofballs like Lee and I are looking for the back variations. At least I haven't seen any premiums attached to any backs yet...

Take Care, Geno

Default T202 -- Red back ink v. Black

Posted By: Lee Behrens

I did some research on the back populations prior to helping Lyman write the article about T202's in Oldcardboard #7. The breakdown for the backs were as follows:

Black 649: 60%
Red 30 : 37%
Black 30 : 3%

I have continued to track the black 30's and have only been able to find 21 diiferent ones at this point. As Geno said,There seems to be no premium attached to the black 30's, but I am willing to pay about a 20% premium for them. I always looking to acquire black 30 backs, if you are not interested in parting with ones you have please let me know so I can catalog them. I am making a halfass effort to acquire all the card with the different backs.

I have never found anything to explain why there is 2 different colors used for the factory 30 backs.

Here's to the best looking vintage cards, T202s

Lee

Almost certainly no chance that all were printed with Black Fact. 30.

Likely all can be found with Red Fact. 30. I will check later if you do not hear from someone else first. Is there one or more cards in particular you wonder about?

thanks Todd!

i am 33 cards into a set, mostly Red F30 backs, thought i would check to verify that a full Red F30 set is possible, before I declare an official quest :-)

Also, since I am a back collector, just generally interested in how many Black F30 backs can be found.

Thanks again!

Using the checklist found in Old Carboard, here is a list of those Red Fact 30's I have confirmed. I have updated the list but can't locate it right now.

Please note that I was only reviewing and copying scans of T202s graded 5 or higher-- not that the others weren't worthwhile but I had to start somewhere and there are tons of T202s out there to check. Any additions to this list with front and back scans would be appreciated, but having one not listed by no means makes it scarce IMO --could save me some work though

I had a fair amount of data on the backs of T202s. Sadly it all got lost when I had a computer crash.

I know I had tracked all the blk 649s and all but one red factory 30 (wish I could remember which one.) So I believe they all exist. I believe I had tracked about 60 black factory 30. I own that many now with some duplicates, not any easy task but I like the challenge.

I think that tracking to black factory 30 are the only one that would be interesting to know of we could get them all confirmed.

Default T202`s

I know you`d mentioned the Factory Red 30`s and the Black 30`s as well. Here`s kind of a cool one, "Lord Gets His Man" in the Black factory 30 edition. Always thought this a set under the radar.
