Default Let's See Some Collection "Top Tens"

So seeing how we are all collectors, I just realized that so many times we are viewing our cards as singular additions (i.e., monthly pickup, auction-specific pickup, or player/set-specific threads).

One aspect of assembling a collection that I've always found satisfying is how the whole can feel so much greater than the parts viewed separately. In other words, it's great seeing a grouping of awesome cards that have become part of one collection-- not unlike a murderer's row-style lineup of great hitters, that lineup becomes its own impressive thing, beyond the hitters examined discretely. Each are impressive on their own, but when you realize a team has all that talent, it takes on a new light.

Anyways, with that in mind, thought it could be cool to see not just the usual one or two, but up to say ten scans of cards from different collections, which would give people a sense of the character or personality of the collection. Could be any cards, for any reason selected to represent a collection.

Of course this would be scan-heavy, but those are my favorite threads-- to me what it's all about. Hence why I love browsing those collection gallery websites now and then.

Default I just wish I knew how to scan cards and attach them to this thread.

This should be an outstanding thread. Showing who you are in 10 cards and what best represents your collection and what is important to you. Give us both barrels, guys! Gnashing my teeth at my own lack of Net tech expertise. ---Brian Powell

Tried to pick some that I don't show on a regular basis, neat idea for a thread.

I'm afraid that I only collect two sets, but here are a couple of my favorites from these sets:

Centering, centering, centering....Did I mention centering?? Unless it's a pretty rare card, centering trumps all for me. I hope you guys don't mind that I keep posting the same cards over and over.

Dean,

Seeing all those centered beauties in one shot is phenomenal. Some real classics there. Much different experience seeing a collection, as opposed to seeing them individually over a long period of time.

I love that horizontal Zeenut up above; what a cool image.

Such amazing stuff people have! And so cool to see emerging themes among the cards in a collection.

MBM, you somehow manage to have high-grade cards that still look undergraded! That is my dream Mantle RC right there-- a centered 7 with snow white borders.

The approach I've taken has been like my own spin on the PSA "Top 250 Sportscards" book. Basically choosing cards that I love on an aesthetic level, but when viewed as a whole, they should also form a well-rounded picture of both baseball's legendary players and baseball card history-- all eras. So there is a type-aspect to it, in that I'd want one M101-4/5 card, one CJ, one e90-1, one 52 Topps, etc. Ideally, one day, I'll have all sets and great players represented. Where it is possible to choose, I like centering for eye appeal.

Like many I adore back wear, as it can make a card with a very expensive front affordable. I always love it when a friend or family member will look at a card, then go on to the next one, and not even look at the back!

Chronologically, some key pieces...

Default Kenny, not enough of a "team" follower

Who would be the third baseman photographed with Zach Wheat?

These are just ten cards that each represent a different subset or area of my collection. They may not be the greatest, but I enjoy them. I hope you do as well.

Ed, I haven't figured out who the third baseman is . Could have even been before he came to Brooklyn. If anyone else has any idea let me know.

Damn, great cards, guys!!

I am also a sucker for scan heavy threads, despite my slow connection.

This would be my top 10, removed from their holders with the help of PhotoShop.

My collection is all over the map: pre-war, post-war, majors, minors, photos, postcards, autographs, artwork etc etc. Hard to pick a definitive "top ten". On any given day each of the following items would qualify as favorites.

Prince Oana

Baltimore at Montreal, 1905

Japanese high school baseball, Koshien Stad, 1936. Love the composition of this rundown.

Recent pickup at Chicago National

I never thought I would ever see a "Lethal Leigh" Mathews card posted on this site. I had to chuckle, back in the 80's I would tape the Friday night Aussie rules games on ESPN and watch them later, Mathews was my favorite!

"Lethal" Leigh Mathews earned his moniker in many ways.
Considered the greatest player of all time in Aussie rules football, he scored, he dominated, and he was feared because he could put you to sleep. He then went on to coach two different teams to a combined 4 premierships, the super bowls of Aussie Rules.

This youtube tells you all you need to know, and is part of the folklore of my hometown game.

Breaking a wooden goal post by running into it, as Australian as you can get

If you'd like to know if Aussie rules is as tough as is suspected, check the following youtube from the same week of games (circa 1982), specifically the Hawthorn / Essendon game which were notorious for their vigor.
