Default Photo dating Joe D/Ruth

Picked up a photo lot recently. How do you estimate when Joe D signed this photo? That photo itself is dated 9/19/39. Has a JSA cert stating steel tip fountain pen. Wondering if there would be a way to possibly estimate the time he signed it?

Picked up this type 1 Ruth photo. Looks like he is playing the Washinton Senators? Anyone have an idea on the possible date of the photo?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Toby

Hey Toby,

I can't really help with the DiMaggio shot for sure, but it looks like to me that it's not a super vintage signature.

With the Ruth, it's definitely from the 1934 All-Star Game (7/10) at the Polo Grounds. I'd know that grandstand anywhere! And of course, there's plenty of historical significance from that date, as Ruth was one of the five consecutive victims of Carl Hubbell's screwball.

They're a few similar shots of both him and Gehrig taking batting practice from that same angle, and almost every single one of them is killer. Your Ruth certainly falls in the same category.

Congrats on two great pick-ups!

Default Ruth and Gehrig Negative

I just picked up this oversized negative of Ruth and Gehrig from the 1934 All-Star Game. Same shot with a wider view that includes Gehrig (who just autographed a baseball for a fan).

It has a few condition issues above the batting cage but I am still very pleased.

Hope you enjoy -

Chris,

Also gorgeous!! Where'd you pick it up? Both of those shots would make awesome paintings!

For what it's worth, the DiMaggio signature looks 1970's era to me. Definitely not playing days. Still a great shot though.
