Default May 2, 1939 - The streak ends.

Before a game with the Tigers in Detroit, Lou Gehrig benched himself "for the good of the team."

Let's see some Iron Horse!!

Gehrig actually played in one more game for the Yankees, an exhibition in Kansas City on June 12 for which he had been advertised. He played three innings and had one at-bat, a weak ground out. In the game accounts, it was reported that he didn't even move for a nearby ground ball at first base. The next day he took the train to the Mayo Clinic to find out what was wrong. I had the scorecard for that game at one time, and thought it was a pretty big deal--Lou Gehrig's actual final game with the Yankees. But when I put it in an auction a few years ago, bidders didn't seem to share my excitement. But it's a great trivia question.
