Default NEW variation of T206 Doyle hands above head

Most of you already know of the double period variation after the Y. N. Y. .

Now this puppy is neat! No period after the Y! N. Y

Ted Z eat your heart out!!!

Thanks Rhett! I appreciate the reply. I was beginning to think that no one on here cared about cards any more.

Hi Dan
Is this the only one missing the "." that you've seen or did you just discover this recently.

Leon -

I would think since part of the Y is gone - it is more likely the period was never there.

I am assuming the missing Y part is not paper loss.... rather something was on the printing plate in that area.

Should be comparable to the N. Y. Nat'l variation I would think.

and an Old Mill back-several hundred k for sure.
First the Murr'y Sweet Cap and now this new Doyle-Dan -these are great new discoveries. It takes a keen eye and you have it.

Thank you so much for sharing and not leaving them uncataloged-

Jim you are too kind but I can't take credit for the Murr'y. Mr. Doug Allen showed me the Lenox back one which I now own. It was in Nate's collection for years.

Yes I seem to get abused for the stuff I keep to myself so that I can collect it like the Tip Top Orioles, can't afford them any longer.

Enjoy the Philly show!

I bought an Old Mill Doyle a while back that has a similar printing flaw. On my card the period is not completely missing just very faint. The "Y" has the same portion missing. My guess is it was a printing plate issue as someone had pointed out earlier. I also have a Doyle with Polar Bear back that has the stem of the "Y" missing, making it appear as "NV". I jokingly call it the "Doyle, Nevada" variation.

One thing I've observed in collecting Doyles, there seems to be a much higher than normal rate of incidence with printing issues on the lettering. I guess this would have to be attributed to fixing the "N.Y. Natl" error on the printing plates.

My personal opinion is that while these cards can provide clues and insight into the mysteries of T206, they are not "variations" and not necessarily more valuable.

I can't argue with that logic Marc. Your post makes good sense. But they are neat to keep an eye on. I think I had to pay a lot for my N. Y. . Doyle. Once I saw more than one with the double periods, I had to have one! Dan.

Dan,

Nice eye, will you be slabbing this and sending it to a big auction house or is this going in a screw down in your old wooden box :-)

Miss seeing you in Philly.

Best

As you can see Jim, it is already slabbed in an SGC 3 holder. That is how I found it. To answer the value and the slabbing question, it has already been BUSTED out of that ridiculous tomb and properly SLID into my T206 binder where it belongs free of any grading garbage. Did I ever state how much I HATE grading??

Default Oh Danny Boy....let's not forget the "Poor Man's" Doyle error card

Dan
You should start a survey on this "Y." flaw card. This "Y." flaw most likely resulted when the printer went a little too far in removing
the "Nat'l" lettering in the caption.

It is definitely scarcer than my "Printer's Mark" discovery.

For the past 3 years, I have kept track of the Joe Doyle cards; and, only 8.3 % of the Joe Doyle cards have this printer's (remnant)
mark out of 229 unique samples. A total of 19 cards have this "mark" and the majority of them are PIEDMONT 350 cards. To a lesser
degree, they are SWEET CAPORAL 350. And, 2 of which are OLD MILL and 2 are POLAR BEAR backs. No "mark" has yet been seen on
the Joe Doyle cards with an EPDG, or a SOVEREIGN, or a TOLSTOI back.

Until very recent, I had not seen this "Y." flaw on any of the Joe Doyle cards. I would be very interested in knowing which backs are
on these Joe Doyle cards with the "Y." flaw that you have (or have seen) ?

printer's mark......................../\ ...........................(remnant from "N" in Nat'l)

Best regards ole buddy, and my Best Regards to your Dad,

TED Z

Ted, As I mentioned in my post, mine has an Old Mill back. Also mentioned in my post, I have another Doyle that has no stem on the "Y" in "NY" so it looks like " Doyle N.V."
Good luck with your new survey.

Marc

I leave it up to you or Dan to run a survey on this Joe Doyle anomaly.
