this isn't quite as many as it seems.

correct me if I'm wrong, but page views measure the number of times any page on a web server or in a web directory is loaded. Thus, each one of us, on every visit to the site, probably account for multiple page views.

As an example, let's say I visit daily. If all I do is look at the menu and leave, that's 30 page views per month. However, if I see that there are 5 topics that have been updated since I last visited and I want to read them all, I'll visit the first one (p.v.#2), click "return to index" (#3), visit the second one (#4), "return to index" (*5), and so on, up to about ten page views. So, if that happens daily, I'm responsible for 300 of the ~90,000 page views.

And while many of us, I'm sure, don't check daily, and don't read every post, there are others who probably account for more. The sheer volume of MW's posting indicates he has probably been responsible for upwards of 100 page views in the last few days. (Not that I'm complaining, Mike <G>.)

So, if we figure that a "regular" is responsible for 300 page views a month, that's only 300 or so regulars (90,000 / 300). Still one heck of a lot of people reading our obscure vintage baseball card nonsense, but maybe not as staggering as the initial impression indicates.

Not a bad estimate. Based on some of the tracking software that I use (i.e., images I post here using my website server), I would put the number of regular viewers in the 375 to 400 range.

Jeff, I hope that's not the way you read the board. If you want to read all five new messages since your last visit, you should do the following. Click on the latest thread with a post, after reading that thread click on next thread. Alternatively click on the earliest thread with a post you haven't read and click on previous post after reading that thread. Either way you will eliminate the need to return to the main index page.

As someone who's maintained a website for a long time, I can tell you that web site numbers cannot be examined under a microscope to find the 'real' meaning, especially if you are trying to relate it to sales. In fact, I rarely use web counters on my site anyore, because I have found that they don't have any profound meaning and you find yourself referring to the 'hits' less and less.

I do think that the total hits (including a single person visiting a bunch of pages many times) is a more worthwhile indication than just looking at 1 person = 1 hit. On person creating a lot of hits, means he or she found the site engaging-- wanted to check out many pages, perhaps returned the next day, then next week. On the other hand, one person making one hit may indicate the person went to the site by accident or thought it sucked from just looking at the web page.

The numbers Elliot posted, one way or the other, that there is an intense interested in the board.

And I certainly didn't mean to suggest that I was finding the "true meaning" behind the numbers.

I have often wondered how many people find this page via google searches and the like, as there are many vintage card topic searches that offer this board as a link. Whenever I am away from my home computer & my bookmarks, I always forget the exact address of the board, so I do a google search for "N162 Anson." Last time I did it, this site was the first one Google offered.

If you do the normal google search but follow the word with 'fogery' or 'counterfeit' you often get my site. 'T206 Honus Wagner Forgery', 'Dali Forgery,' 'Fro Joy Babe Ruth Forgery,' 'baseball card forgery.' Some may get the impression I'm quite the prolific forger.
