Default Scan of PSA cards - please help, thanks!

Posted By: Mike

Hi everyone, I have some nice PSA graded vintage cards I want to post scans like Hal has done on his awesome web site.

I use a Canon LiDE scanner, which scans autographs and flat cards beautifully
--- BUT the scans of cards in SGC and PSA holders is really blurry cuz of the plastic holder.

How do you all manage to get such nice scans of your PSA and SGC graded stuff?

Thanks!!

I just lay the slab down on the scanner and it comes out fine. I've never had your problem. Weird.

The scanner is at the office, so I don't know what brand it is.

I use "maximum" resoution when it gives me the choice on how to save the scan... but I really don't know if that makes a difference.

I don't have an answer for you... but I did want you to know that it can be done because I do it without any special equipment or anything.

This is a problem I still struggle with, getting the most out of my scanner and graded cards. I have a Canon but I can't get picture perfect scans either and must tweak my Photo Workshop program to sharpen the image and it still isn't crystal, but passable. If you do a search on the VBC Forum site, this topic has been discussed at length and should further help you.

I had the same problem with my Canon scanner and could never solve it.
I remember reading some posts about these scanners and a bunch of others had the same issues.
Apparently it has to with the "technology" used in these scanners. I'm not really technical so I can't be more specific.Ultimately I bought an Epson scanner and it works very well with slabbed cards.
Good luck,
Alan

Not that I'm a huge Canon proponent or anything, but I thought it only fair to mention that I have a very inexpensive Canon scanner (like $50) and it works beautifully for graded card scans. No adjustment necessary. Just use the "magazine" setting in my software and scan away!

My old Lexmark scanner always made graded cards blurry. I recently bought an HP Scanner 3970 for $40 on Ebay and it does great images. Here's an example.

The ultra thin scanners (such as the one I believe you have) do not have the depth of scan as the thicker scanners. I posted a message with a link a while back on this topic that describes the differences. I had a Canon LIDE that I ended up giving away and replacing with a less expensive Canon that does not use LED optics.

First off, the scan of the Goslin is gorgeous. I am going to get that very scanner --- my scans don't come out even close! And yes, I think the Canon LiDE is just so thin that it's very virtue of compactness kills it here. Thanks so much for your help and happy collecting! I am bummed out by all my bids getting crushed on Mastro, so I am taking a little hobby break myself.
