Didn't see one yet, so I decided to kick it off with this 1955 Spic And Span Hammer.

I took a gamble on this card late last week from an eBay seller who appeared to do more business in antiques and toys than cards - it helped that they accepted my offer which was $55 lower than the BIN with no negotiating. Sometimes you gamble and win, because this thing arrived today and is way nicer than I was expecting. Dare I even say “minty”...

Default 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews

Just got one of my dream cards in the mail today. Now if I could get that BLEEPING SGC submission form to work I could send it off to get protected in their lovely slab.

One of my favorite post-WWII cards:

Not my standard HOF-only collection but I have always wanted this card. I like that it commemorates his main contribution to the sport. Its all there in the eyes.

Very nice Mathews! I recently sold a PSA 2 I had (to help pay for the Mantles I bought LOL) and I've been missing that card ever since. What a player he was. I'm hoping to pick up an even nicer PSA 3 or 4 in the future!

Again, very nice card, Ben! Definitely my white whale.

Recent 52 P/U's. The Roe is staind and the Hitch pretty OC but like I mentioned before, beggars can't be choosers.

Not easy to get good real estate above the name. So many seem cut right above the letters.

Very nice, and good job on the T/B centering. It’s hard to find that card even in high grade where it’s not almost miscut in that direction.

The ‘72s are my favorite 70’s set. Some of the cards have color combos that just really pop - and this is one of them:

Today’s LCS visit resulted in this ‘72, to my knowledge the first Thurman Munson card I’ve ever deliberately bought. I have a few others from over the years that I somehow acquired in group lots or something. Shame he is not the Hall of Fame...

Using the ebay coupon, I ended up grabbing this awesome 1969 Topps #500 Mickey Mantle White Letter Variation for less than a third of what the last couple of straight 6's sold for. The dreaded 'miscut' is on the back and it is slight, so I find it virtually meaningless...

Here's another beautiful card that is technically/mathematically off-centered (the back is centered nearly perfectly), but if I was around in the summer of '62, chewing a huge wad of gum, and broke this 'Stan the Man' out of a pack, it never would've entered my mind that it was 'flawed.' And I got it for a fraction of the cost of a straight 9...

My first 1955 Topps Doubleheader. Hoskins was one of the most dangerous hitters in a Homestead Grays lineup that included Josh Gibsob, integrated the Texas League as the league's top pitcher and third leading hitter, and pitched for the Cleveland Indians for two years.

Default Mail Day!

Super excited to add this one to my Joe Torre collection. I have been waiting on this one for a long time.

Slowly whittling away at the Joe Torre master set...

Default March pick up thread

It’s not often I can swing a multiple-card mailday anymore, but that’s what happened today with the arrival of these three from evilBay. Bonus: what I thought was a white print mark there below Ernie’s chin must have been a scanner issue, was not there on the card when I opened it, and it is gorgeous. The Carlton I have always thought is a super undervalued card - issued in his greatest season, and commemorative of one of the most famous lopsided trades in the history of the game. I’d assert it’s his most important card other than his rookie. Sorry the Ripken does not technically fit our timeframe, but it’s an upgrade to another copy I had recently bought before I noticed that it had edge wear. Also on this one, I learned to look for no annoying yellow print marks in the grass. 8’s can still have them...but this one doesn’t.

Thanks. I'm doing just the subset of AS cards. They are actually very affordable for high numbers and HOF'ers considering the era. There seems to be a weird price discrepancy too between mid-grade and super high grade with those cards that does not exist for other vintage cards. For example to get a nice Mantle #578, even like a PSA 4 sellers want at least $250. But for the highest end, you could get a Mint 9 for only $1250. It doesn't seem to me like pricing for base cards of superstars in other sets works like that...what is a Mint 9 '65 Mantle 350 going to be? Like $15k...

An addition to my “underrated pitchers” collection. ;-) Nicer 5 than I thought in-hand; rough cuts aren’t supposed to discount the grade - but that’s all I see offhand which is keeping this from about a 6.5.
