Default Pitchers shown on cards Batting

Posted By: Bobby Binder

there are not many cards on Pitcher primarily shown with a bat in his hands and not on the mound or in the motion. Not including the Babe of course in his earlier cards.
I will start with this E93 Cy Young

Here's Caruthers in an at bat pose. He's probably most well known as a great 19th century pitcher but he wasn't bad with a bat. He had a .282 lifetime batting average with two pretty good back to back seasons at bat: he was fourth in batting in 1886 with a .334 average and fifth in batting in 1887 with a .357 (American Association)

Another 19th Century example - Ed "Cannoball" Morris.

Why Goodwin pictured him batting is beyond me, since unlike his contemporary, Mr. Caruthers, Ed Morris was awful with the stick, having a paltry .161 lifetime batting average.

(Not my card. Image borrowed from good ol' vcp.com. Hope that's OK, Bobby B.)

Pitchers in batting poses were fairly common in N172. The V100 Red Faber also shows him batting. If I remember correctly, Jim Kaat's 1973 Topps card shows him batting. The AL adopted the DH in '73, but the photo is obviously from '72 or before.
