Default REA Pickups- 19th Century Heating Up!!

Was happy to pickup these two cards tonight in REA. As more folks are getting into 19th Century, I'm trying to pickup the last few guys I need for my collection before prices get too crazy.

Love that Ruth Type 1, wow. I was watching that image, bid on the large photo Cuidad Trujillo and the Ruth Thompson but bowed out early.

Did win and posted previously in the art thread the Ruth portrait by Graig Kreindler (so excited), plus grab some companion pieces a 1934 Tour photo (own a game ticket), Babe Ruth Day Yankees scored program (recent ticket pickup) and 1935 New York Cubans (2 known) photo with Dihigo and Oms.

Nosebleed auction for me. Picked up 3 great lots.
1906 Foldout postcard with Louis Leroy. Only other way to get Leroy is to mug Scott Brockelman for his W600. 1903 schedule with Adkins on the SL team image rather than later version printed in the 1906 SL portfolios. Jack O'Connor autograph - first team, died in 1937. Now if David Atkatz had just called me, we would have saved a lot of fees!

Ciudad Trujillo photo is a great piece. Very surprised at how much it sold for in a very down market. Multiple past sales were all in the $30,000’s.

Strong price for this Waddell rookie, for some well-deserved M101-1 love. $8400. More 19th Century strength.

Amazing pick-ups! Several of these were on my radar as well.

Instead, I drifted into my first-ever auto baseball and landed this 12 count 500+ HR ball with Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Williams and 8 other friends!

Won one of the E106's and one of the Uncle Jacks. Bid on several E90-1s and E90-2s and was well outbid on everything. Was interested in some of the 19th century photo lots but they went past my limit. Will post my winnings when I get the cards (as per my superstition...I don't like to post pickups until I actually have them in hand).

A couple Chicago Cubs postcards for me, and they're dandies. A fold-out extravaganza from 1907 showing the pennant winners, and a 1908 fold-out showing the game between Chicago and New York at the Polo Grounds that decided the 1908 pennant. The back of that one is just as cool as the front, I'll post about it on my Cubs thread later.

Only picked up one item, but for me it is the holy grail! Born and passed away in my hometown in Nebraska. I've been waiting for the perfect Grover item, and dang it, this is it. My middle school teacher bank account is not smiling today, but as I say, "Buy once, cry once" because once I get this in hand it may never leave!

Happy with my Caruthers pickups. Curious if anyone here won the S110? Somewhat surprised it didn't end higher.

Congrats! If I couldn’t get it I am happy to see it go to a fellow Alexander fan

I won the 1911 Grover photo. I don't know if you were the underbidder or not, but after a bit I figured it was down to me and one other person. I might have fallen victim to two things:

1) Not knowing with any great idea what an appropriate price for something like this is, as this is my first ever type 1 photo purchase.

2) A new addiction to type 1 photos, particularly portraits.

I love those photos you got, Chris!

Great Ruth photos!

Jeff: Huge congrats on that Jackson! Just an incredible card and set!

My lone win, that didn't break the bank:

I won the Newsboy Ward arms folded, and another common from the set, was the underbidder or so on all the rest.

Also won a '49 Bowman Snider and 3 sets of Armour Coins. Anyone want to trade those I've got a ton of dupes.

Wow Jeff.
You are the one that kept me up late slugging it out for that FM Joe Jackson.

Great pickups especially the FM Jackson

Congrats

I lost out on so many items. Glad to see many of them were won by members here. This was one of my wins that I'm rather stoked about. Great wins everyone!

I’ve got an oddball 19th century card coming soon. Don’t want to jinx it yet by showing a preview too soon.

I'm just waiting to see how long it is before material sold in the auction is offered on the BST at even higher prices...

Great pickups everyone. Special Congrats to Jeff, Mike and Paul:

Going into this auction, I had my eyes on numerous items. I had to have the W601 Pittsburgh PC. I wanted, and won, a few 1914 CJ upgrades (and a 1915 Joe Wood I thought was a 1914 and do not need). I was also looking at maybe upgrading my E106 Wagner Throwing, getting another E90-1 Jackson, and finishing my 33 Delong set with the nice SGC 5 Gehrig). But, there were a number of bigger-ticket items I was very serious about, including the FM Jackson, the Star Player Candy Gehrig, and the 1937 Ciudad Trujillo picture. I also really wanted the M101-1 Waddell.

Before extended bidding started, I rode the FM Jackson up to about $60k, getting immediately outbid every time. Figuring I was going against someone who had to have the card, I decided not to pursue the card in extended bidding (where it went to the moon). So I pivoted to the Ciudad Trujillo, the Gehrig, and the Waddell. I competed on all of them while I went back and forth on the Ciudad Trujillo. As I batted for that, I finally determined it was what i wanted the most and to buy it come hell or highwater (and then hopefully loan to the Negro league museum or something), at which point I let the Gehrig and Waddell go.

Its always fun to see who was on the other side of last minute auction battles, and congrats to those who bested me -- you paid top dollar for top cards (its what we do)!

Does anyone want to claim being high bidder on:

Lot # 166: 1890 Columbus (Ohio) BBC American Association Team Cabinet Card

Initial bidding had only 5 bids. It was at $600 when extended bidding started.

In the end it finally went for $2K ($2.4K with juice).

If you looked closely at the back of the cabinet, it appears it was signed by Al Buckenberger around 1890. I'm guessing that may have been missed by most and caught by the few bidders that were bidding during the extended bidding.

It was a nice score for whoever won it (I've got my money on a certain astute board member).

Default Nice End of The Year

I picked up a few major pieces for my collecting focus and sold off a few that were out of my focus. I paid up for the winnings, and the items I sold went much higher than expected, like double! There are certainly some things that are softening in price but they are typically items that deserve a market correction (common and in lesser condition). The rare, nice stuff that "collector consciente" are usually attracted to seemed to be strong. I will wait to post scans until next month after a round of reholdering and crossovers at SGC.

Pretty sure I was the underbidder... chased it as far as I could considering other pickups. Very nice pickup to whomever won it and certainly reach out if it is ever consigned in the future

Only one pick up for me it was the Sportsmanship and Humanitarian award presented to Roberto on Clemente Day at Three Rivers. I’m thinking the photo used in the listing (1st pic) may have scared other potential bidders away. Fortunately I saw the item in person a year ago and had a better idea on how it actually looked. The substantial size (20.5” X 23.5”) may have also been a factor in limiting bidders? I’m thrilled to win it as I’ve been the under bidder on in two other auctions.
