Just added the Iron Horse from the very first Topps baseball card set (or subset) ever: 1948 Topps Magic Photos. Not one you see everyday!

I finally got a Rizutto! It's a little rougher than what I normally try to collect but it will have to do for now. It is a black back version.

I also, while I was at it, decided to upgrade my Ashburn.

That's a really nice looking Mantle. It has such white borders it makes it look "pack fresh".

Thanks. It's somewhere in the EX range. It does have some light print snow in the background to the left of Mick's head, but I'm ok with it.

Beautiful snag John.

I've been on a bit of a hiatus with my "Mantle Project", just taking care of a few issues.
Haven't had the chance to pick up a '60 yet, and its one of my favorites.

That card looks every bit the 5-6 range overall.
Did you pick that up at your local shop again? I see you have picked up a handful of things there recently.

Yes, my LCS guy might as well be my drug dealer...

I think overall corners and surface keep it out of the 6 range, but Mike (my dealer) said he thought it was a 5.5. If that’s the case I was more than happy than the price I paid. I did luck out on the LCS, it’s literally a mile away from my house. And had been there for years before I first noticed!

eBay mailday. I’ve twisted this one around in the light for a while now, and still not sure why it’s not closer to a 6 than a 4. It’s possible that there is a wrinkle I’m just not picking up somewhere, but for the corners on this one, I was happy to pay a 4 price.

I dont generally buy cards but I have always thought this was a pretty card. Certainly not 1952 Topps Mantle sexy (congrats) but pretty nonetheless.

Nice card. I had a lower grade version of that as a kid back in the early 90's, but it did not survive into my current collection. The Duke is quite a bargain these days. Back in the heyday of hobby explosion which started in the 1980's, he wrote a book and enjoyed some of that same spotlight as his contemporaries in the song, Mickey and Willie. But anymore their cards are way more pricey. Ok by me, as that means a legend still in his own right like Snider is even more affordable.

some real eye-candy here.

I thought this 1975 TCMA Waterloo Royals card of Willie Wilson was cool (love the B&W cards) and I was fortunate to receive it for free from a fellow collector this month...not sure how many Willie Wilson fans are out there...but I always loved looking at his stats on the back of my 1980s baseball cards:

Default Weekend Pickup

I acquired a fairly small collection on Friday night and have started to sort through it. This collection was stored in the back room of an antique shop for 30+ years, but is generally pretty clean.

The main reason I wanted it was for the 13 1968 Topps posters that are preserved with cardboard backing and wrapped in cellophane. The Mantle and Clemente are gorgeous.

I didn't know it at the time, but I have discovered a 1982 Fleer vending box in the group, along with some unopened boxes of oddball Topps issues from the 1980s.

The vending box is flimsy and not in great shape, but the cards inside are virtually perfect except for some slight warping. I decided to go ahead and go through it and it yielded one Cal Ripken RC, a Lee Smith RC and multiples of a few other Hall of Famers. I've never built this set, but now I might since I have the key cards.

There was also an uncut sheet of 1982 Topps baseball. The edges of the sheet are a little rough in some spots, but I think it'll look fine in a poster frame. There are no creases within the middle of the sheet. The Ripken is perfect.

I was intrigued by the right edge, where there is some blue ink smeared on the Lee Smith card. I would love to have this Smith card by itself, with the ink smeared. I'm a sucker for oddball printing mistakes.

There were two large binders -- one with 60s/70s baseball cards and one with 50s/60s/70s football cards. The Football binder was in much better shape than the baseball. It included a great Joe Montana RC, along with several RCs and 2nd/3rd year cards for 1960s-70s era Hall of Famers. The Terry Bradshaw RC is a little rough.

The baseball binder was filled with tons of Braves players (several Aarons) and a lot of HOFers from the 60s/70s, but it's disappointing that some of them are a bit beat up.

That Mantle pose is really cool. Too bad they didn't use that pose for his '69 Topps card. THAT would have been a classic card IMHO.

It is a cool pose when I consider it, but my first thought is always that it looks like The Mick nearly knocked himself upside the head with the bat. I guess it's a golf swing? (I'm not a golfer...)

Lower grade, yes - but the picture has no print snow, and the coloring on this card in-hand is as good as I’ve ever seen it. Lately I find myself much more comfortable with these types of cards...plus eye appeal, and lower technical grade. The fact that they are much easier on the wallet doesn’t hurt either...

Lol!! I can see exactly what you mean. Now you've ruined it for me.

Nice Aaron too. No print snow is tough to find. Nice pick up.

I like the picture. But knowing Mantle, I think he was probably trying to act goofy in it with the whole golf swing thing. Who knows.

For me, it's never been a great pose of Mick, probably just because of his facial expression. I always felt like this is his "I don't give a bleep," pose. Almost seems to me that he's annoyed that they're taking his picture.

With so few sets produced, I can't for the life of me understand why the 1967 Laughlin World Series cards aren't much more popular than they are. Yowza!! Picked up a Joltin' Joe (low POP) and some long forgotten pitcher...

About a week ago, I picked up a few '56 Topps Phillies from the BST.

Nothing major here. But I picked up a lot of around 270 different cards from 1962 Topps baseball. They're probably Ex with some VG-Ex for the most part. No major stars like Mays, Mantle, Maris, etc. But there's lots of HOFers, several of the Ruth cards, some LL cards, all star cards and more. The cards were all in penny sleeves and all priced. The total BV is a shade over $2,200 or so (I know BV doesn't matter but that's what was used to price this lot by the LCS).

I paid $100 for it at the LCS yesterday. Not sure what I'm going to do with it: if I'm going to keep it and build the set or trade them individually to set builders or sell the lot as one. But here it is...

November has been my Laughlin month, and I picked up a pair of the tough 1971 Fleer World Series 'update' cards...

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

Overpaying yesterday is simply underpaying tomorrow.

Darren, I love the Red Sox - Reds card. While we can surmise that’s Yaz and Bench on it, it’s always bothered me that their names are nowhere to be found. There are other cards in the same set that mention the HOFers they picture. Would love that card to say Carl’s name on it somewhere.

Agreed. Save for the beautiful Clemente on the 1971 World Series card, it seems Laughlin didn't do too much with specific players in the 'update' cards. Among other things, why in heck is Reggie not showcased on the 1977 card??? Makes no sense. I wonder if Fleer perhaps ran into some licensing issues? (It's definitely Yaz on the card you referenced, but with the Bench-like player batting lefty, it may be a Rose/Bench amalgam??)

This is correct. Active players could not be used.
