Default Strip cards

Don't know why they don't get more love. I realize they were cut in many cases 70 years ago, and cutting isn't always great, but love the W517 set and other random strip cards I have. These are cards that look they lived a life, suffered a few injuries along the way, and weren't just shoved in a box or a vault somewhere. They have character, and there are a hell of a lot of hall of famers.

I'd title this "Show us Your Strippers!" but likely that would go downhill in a real hurry.

I'd guess that their unpopularity largely has to do with their low production values. Lots of strip sets were very cheaply made, and some of them are simply ugly. W517 is a notable exception, and isn't really like most of the strip sets. If it's unpopular that fact might have to do with its size, 3x4 is hard to display with the rest of a collection. (If you collect them raw, for example, you can't put them into a binder.)

That said, not everybody is upset at their unpopularity. They do make some really inner-circle hall of famers available to collectors on a tight budget. I've got Grove and Alexander strip cards that would have probably been beyond my price range in a more ordinary set. And I recently saw a W516 Cobb sell for $60 on eBay; granted in truly terrible condition ('poor' didn't quite do it justice), but still, somebody got a Cobb for sixty bucks.

Nice slight print offset on the Frank Frisch in previous post.

This is my only strip card a Tris Speaker with a very nice print offset.

Averill card is nice. I saw on a website that his Exhibits card from the PCL is one of the most sought out Exhibits. See it on eBay once in a while but is usually around $900.

This is a very cool strip item. Almost pulled the trigger a few times:

Here are a few complete strips from the 1950 R423 set that i just got graded - a little after the "war" but w many prewar players. Side note - the 7 is the top of the pops!

Default W515-2

I love my complete set of W515-2 "The Little Wonder Picture Series" ...which are MUCH rarer than their W515-1 counterpart. And the number of HOFers in the set is staggering!

Default Ya Gotta Luv'em...

Ben, Your Strip Card Set is Really Cool...
Love the Brother Duo Cards and how some of the others have a Portrait Look, as opposed to how some have evolved inta an alien species Look.
Whitey Witt's small arms & even smaller body, ta go wit his Big Head is Classic!
Cobb's Look takes an effort just ta gaze at...

And Your Mr. Speaker's Shift, What I would Consider an Excellent Ghost Card, is a Keepr All Day Long... Very Cool indeed Sir!

I wish that was my strip card set. I just quoted the owners post saying how cool the vivid colors are.

Thank you for the comment on my Speaker. I bought it because of the awesome print offset.

I absolutely agree with you. I love strip cards. Granted there are some ugly ones but there are plenty of ugly regular issue cards as well. IMHO they are underrated. It's not like they're reprints.

Love me some strip cards. Here are some that don't get much love otherwise...some cards from the W9316 set, featuring color and design variations:

Default Stripped down to the bone

Strip cards are a low budget collector's dream, especially in lower condition. Here are a few W514 cards, most with extremely tight border cuts on three sides.

My only strip card...a W514 HOF'er with a neighbor. Got it cheap on eBay last year due to a poor description.

I love the rainbow of subjects that are in strips.

To be honest, I have far more nonsport cards than players. The actors and famous celebrities are a slice of history.

I have been on the hunt for Arbuckle lately, but have some great ones like houdini, Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd.

There was an Arbuckle recently on EBay but I forgot to bid! I need his card also for my classic comedians sub set I am working on.

Ron, did you have that frame made yourself? I have a W573 strip (formerly of the prestigious Luckey collection) that I'd like to display at some point. Do you know how the cards were mounted in the frame?

I purchased the 1922 W573 Sisler simply because I wanted a card from his .420 year (in Strat-o-matic, as a kid, you either wanted that card of Sisler or Gehrig's 1927 year--.373, 47 HR's, 118 extra-base hits--as your first baseman).
Was quite a year for George, with, as I recall off the top of my head, 44 doubles, 16 triples, 8 Hr's and 51 stolen bases! It really doesn't make any difference to me that its a strip card, as opposed to American Caramel or whatever.

Thumbs up to stippers,

Larry

Back in 1980 I had a choice between the one you have and the one I chose to buy at a Flea Market. They display very well

I just picked up this W517 today at a card show... it's my first strip card (actually my first pre-1952 card... yes, I'm a pre-war newbie). I'm totally in love with it.

A member here just sold me my first strip card. W516 Cicotte.
On average how does this set and others from the era compare in rarity to T206? I know they haven't been as coveted and preserved as The Monster but how does the survival rate compare?

As only a guess I have to think, given what I have seen, there are more T206s overall than W516s. As for a specific player it might be different.

and a new pickup...

One of my first great buys from ebay included two W560 two-color HOFers. I subsequently sold them. Having a bit of sellers regret, I picked up this devil's-beard Freddie Lindstrom.
