I have to admit that I am guilty of buying cards for my collection for no apparent reason. I think my focus today is buying cards that I think are neat....and obscure. What is your focus? Show a card if you want to....

woops...I need to add I am working on 3 sets (sort of)....D303 master set of both General Baking back and Mothers back, 1916 W-Unc Big Head set and T209-1 set...not quite type collecting but gives me something to search for (and spend money on; right Jeff?)

Leon, from what I can tell your focus is buying every card you can until there is no money left in your bank account. That is a worthy focus, one of which I have practiced for years.

My focus (today) is Cobb, Chase, Jennings, Brown, Donlin, Mathewson, McGraw and, to a lesser extent, Greenberg and Koufax. And any other card I like.

lately i've been getting really interested in buying cards that have real photos on them. like the m101-x sets and old judges. i just think there is something more interesting in seeing the actual legend on the front of the card instead of a rendition. love the lajoie m101-4.

Whilst the focus of our collecting initiatives continues to be on the ultra
high grade pre-war type cards that appear on "America's Toughest Want." we have
expanded our interests.

Over the past nine months, we have undertaken a concerted effort to obtain
a plethora of ultra-high grade rare regional cards, primarily from the mid-1950's
Along the way, we have been fortunate to obtain copies of newspaper and in-store
advertisements promoting said sets.

We also continue to add to our pre-1900 book and program collection. Our focus
has been on the expansion of our collections of Negro League and Federal League memorabilia

With that thought in mind, we wonder if anyone has ever seen a program from
either the Kansas City or Indianapolis Federal League teams? We have been active
collectors of Federal League items for more than a quarter-century and have never
seen or heard about a program from these two teams.

We appreciate your help

on solid mid-grade pw HOFers. Also working on E93, E98 and W575-2 sets. Collect postcards as well but seem to have picked up a lot of company in that endeavor lately.

I guess i have 3 foci at this point:
(1)
collecting packs from what i have deemed the T206 era, which means stretching 1909-1911 to encompass 206 packs and others i just have to have.
i also buy a card to hang with the pack for illustrative purposes.
So far i have piedmont, sweet cap, american beauty, epdg, old mill, hassan,
mecca, helmar, high grade, recruit(2 diff. factories),pirate, egyptienne
straights.

(2) doing my brand of 'type' collecting by picking one card from each year
surrounding the 206 era and framing them together, alongside the packs display. so far i have 1906 and 1908-1915. I'm thinking 1900-1915 will be the goal.

(3)knowing that being through with the Monster means looking at the cards
several times a week, researching key elements which arise as i do the looking, and continuing to sit in disbelief upon realizing there's still so much to
investigate.

best,
barry

I am in full blown addict mode. I have sold off 90% of my odds and ends collection to fund a VG-VGEX T206 HOFer and notable players with the different T206 backs. This got started late in the spring when I bought an SGC 40 Lenox Johnson from the cardtarget shut down. I sold off nearly all of my T cards in college to pay the cost of living (beer and girls, and wasted the rest), and managed to stayed away for a few years after, because I know I have a problem, and not the kind of money to back it up. Here is where I stand:

American Beauty 350: Bresnahan SGC 50
Broad Leaf 350:
Drum:
Cycle 460:
Blank:
Tolstoi: Red Cobb SGC 40
Lenox: Johnson SGC 40
Piedmont Factory 42: Johnson SGC 40
Old Mill: Blue Chase SGC 40
Old Mill Southern:
Sovereign 460: Black Chase SGC 50
Polar Bear: Speaker SGC 40
EPDG: Kelley SGC 50
Uzit: Merkle SGC 40 (on the way)
Sweet Cap:
Hindu:
Carolina Brights:

I am looking for a Shag for the OMSL and a Matty port. for the Sweet Cap spot. The bad news is I am running out of things to sell to finance this, and I have been cut off from the bank account. The wife does think they are "pretty" though. If I olny had my old T's left from when I was younger, I would be a lot better off.

I've been collecting non-sports (something I thought I'd never do).....British pre-war non-sports. Like the old tobacco albums that they put out. Only buying complete sets. Its enjoyable and much cheaper than today's pre-war baseball card prices.

I have been going after cards, buttons or photos of Kansans or players who played in Kansas. Like Ali, I'm looking for more real photo or b/w renditions. I've only been doing this for about 6 months and am still researching what is actually out there.

I concentrate on cards that Lichtman may want one day.....

Truth be told.... I am a sucker for Wagner cards....

But I also keep an eye out for any Cobby, Matty, or WaJo

Then I sometimes jump into the off-the-wall stuff....

I don't think I like anything better than a cool looking RPPC....

I absolutely love vintage golf cards:

oh... and did I ever mention that I like to clown around when I get the chance?

What was this thread about again? Oh yeah.... "focus". If one thing is consistent in my collecting.... it is my lack of focus.

John -- if you really want such a card, I suspect one will be offered in a few hours in a new ebay listing. Overprint? Underprint? What's the difference?

Joe, I already have my Old Tom card. Traded away most of my collection for him. His rookie year was 1972, right?

I saw that underprint on ebay and obviously I'd rather have that one but theres no way I could afford that card. My $1500 offer still stands for the overprint though.

I am only a couple cards away from completing my tobacco Cubs effort, needing only the T206 Brown Cubs shirt and Tinker Bat Off to complete the team sets in T200, T201, T205, T206, T207

So we are heading into some 1940s/50 stuff, and back to the HOF rookies, I think

I've been collecting currently used bats, which is much more dangerous. Four concussions last year alone. Also, Obaks (the end of the 1910 set is in sight now that the Miller has been slain), e90-1s, T207s, D311s, and those last few T206s.

Nice one Jeff.
While I have not recently checked market prices on high end T206s such as your gorgeous example posted above, I think we are all well aware that I am not shopping in the same market within which you operate!

If you have a SGC20 or 30 that presents well today, I would gladly give you a hamburger on Tuesday...or something like that, so he said.

Well, I meant in the whole market. I had been looking for all of Brown's cards in the T206 and started noticing that what used to sell as a 6 was now a 7, what once was the price of a 4 is now a 5 and so on. Now's the time to strike if you can find one. Maybe there are some Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac shareholders on the board that will sell you one cheap.

My current focus is collecting at least one Boston National card from as many different issues as I can.

I am putting together a Boston NL T205 and T206 set. Would appreciate any help with tougher T206 backs. Cycle, Broadleaf, etc.

For me, it's the earliest possible card of each BB HOF'er, including Team Cards (pre-war only), Minor League Cards, Managers, Pioneers, Umpires, Broadcasters, Journalists, Negro Leaguers & Executives. Has gotten to be a pretty expensive endeavor so usually lower-grade is my only option.

Hello Everyone,

I'm just grinding away at collecting the monster. I'm trying to add about fifty good looking cards to my collection every six months, so with the 170 that I own now I should complete the set in about four years, but there are always interesting decisions that have to be made. What seems "good looking" one day, doesn't seem so "good looking" the next. Take a look at the two cards below--which one would you keep? The SGC50 is better centered, with a sharper registration, but the corners are soft. The ungraded example has great corners, but there is a ink mark in lower border next to the name. Normally, I would be turned off by a marked card, but boy those corners on the ungraded card are tempting. Obviously, when you collect prewar cards you will always be trading one flaw for another, but trying to decide which flaw to accept is interesting.

Best wishes,

Joe

It's not just that I really like the era and the players. It is also that these sets, like m116's and m101-4's, still have a lot of terra that is incognita to me.

I just completed my 1907 Dietsche Tigers thanks to Jeff Lichtman selling me his old Cobb fielding. Now I am going to work on the master set including the '08 and '09s

I have temporarily stopped buying Exhibits until the whales stop feeding!

Worches have become an interest for me, except that they are so darn scarce. I just picked up Lefty Grove off the BST.

Last but not least, my Pinkerton postcard collection is still expanding. I recently picked up a Matty off of Ebay for $6.00. It wasn't hidden, but it ended the last night of the National which is the only explanation I can think of for the great deal I got.

I am currently (the last 12+ years) working on the E254 set...always looking to buy those nasty little round things by the way.

Other that that just about anything that catches my eye.

T222 Fatimas (need just a few more)

I'm now getting pretty serious about:

e91b set
1933 Diamond Stars

Thinking I might be:

Starting a caramel type card collection.....just picked up my first e107!!
And a few other type card things

Mostly programs, scorecards and autographs - always T206 and T205 cards and other prewar issues

My long term goal is to get at least one card of every White Sox player, manager, coach, owner (must be shown as White Sox).

Other collecting interests are:

1. Indianapolis Hoosiers (1887-1889)
2. W572 set
3. T206 White Sox Team set (Sweet Caporal, Factory 30)

For the "modern" stuff:
1. Complete run of Topps base sets (my first cards I bought was a pack of 1976 baseball)
2. Dave Concepcion (PSA graded)
3. Chris Bootcheck

There is probably more, but as you can see my focus shifts a lot. At one time I was trying to a Game Used bat card of the 300 HR club members (showing the team they hit #300 with). I have also looked into getting a card of every player (Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey) that was born in Indiana. This is where my Chris Bootcheck collection got started.

Looking for T206 Sweet Caporal Fact. #30 White Sox in Poor to Fair condition.
