I was recently doing a little research and came upon an ad in the 1916 Washington Post for Holmes to Homes Bread. I presume this would establish Washington as the source for these cards (previously unknown).An interesting contest was mentioned in the ad. "BASEBALL OUTFIT CONTEST, We're offering valuable prizes, such as a complete Baseball Outfit for a team of ten, glove and catchers' outfits, etc. for the return of a complete set of 200 baseball players' pictures, one of which is packed with every loaf of our 10c bread. Further particulars will be found on the circular accompanying it." I wonder if anyone ever completed the set? If other premiums were offered in the same way, it may be the reason the cards are so scarce.

That sounds really neat. Can you post a scan of the ad or send me a scan and I will do it? I also believe this will further establish credibility that this is a set and not someone playing games with ink stamps....Thanks again for the info ....

Using my 6th sence here. My guess would be they only made one of each card and held back 1 of the 200 cards produced so no one would collect them all, and redem for a price/trip.

Off subject, if memory serves me correctly, Mcdonald's Monopoly game was rigged where the inside person for Mcdonald's game many winning tickets to friends around the Country for years until they found out not too long ago.

Wonder how many companies run legit promotions?

One of the security gaurds and couple of employees at the plant that made the game pieces got busted stealing all the big winning pieces. They finally got caught when McDs didn't tell the company what part of the country the winning pieces were supposed to go to. Prior to that, the theives had been sending the pieces to family members in the part of the country that winning pieces were supposed to appear.

With the advent of internet registration of contest, fraud like this can't happen anymore, but I am sure that there are some enterprising crackers trying to generate key code programs to to fingure what the winning codes. For those that don't know what a key code program is, it is a program that generates the apparent random letters and numbers you see. They have already figured out how to generate codes to register pirated copies of computer games. It certainly wouldn't take much for them to cross it over to contest key codes.

I found the ad by searching Proquest, which is presently one of the benefits of SABR membership (http://www.sabr.org). Unfortunately, proquest has cancelled most institutional memberships and the SABR benefit soon runs out, I believe at the end of the year.

However, until then, you can search the newspapers for many great ads and baseball stories.

Are these cards more like M101-4/5 or E135? The back scan looks like the smaller M101.

It's an m101-4/5 Sporting News type. About 3-4 years ago Lemke used a scan of the one I got from Jay M as a type to put in the Big SCD.....
