Default The mystique of the SOVEREIGN 350 "apple green" cards......Show us your green apples

American Lithographic (ALC) started printing their 150 Series subjects in the Spring/Summer of 1909. ALC actually printed 156 subjects in their 1st series press runs.
ALC followed their 1st series by printing their most ambitious 350 Series cards. And initially, they included as many as 270 additional subjects.

Circa Fall of 1910....while printing their SOVEREIGN 350 cards, ALC selected a specific pre-printed sheet of 66 subjects to be extended into their planned 460 Series.
Apparently, in order to differentiate these 66 cards from the other SOVEREIGN 350 series cards, ALC printed these 66 with a lighter shade of GREEN ink (that we now
refer to this color as "apple green").

Nowadays, we refer to this intermediate group of T206 cards as the 350/460 Series. Actually, 63 (of the 66) subjects from this 350/460 Series were printed with
350-type & 460-type backs. Since Joe Doyle, Simon Nicholls and Bob Rhoades careers ended prior to when the 460 backs were printed.

Normal Sovereign green

Sovereign "apple green"

My hypothetical 72-card sheet (which may also have been printed in a 12 x 12 card format of 144 cards)

v................................................. ....... Six super-prints ............................................v

Note
I show the 6 super-print cards Double-Printed (D-P) on this sheet. Several surveys over the years have consistently indicated that these 6 super-prints were D-P
relative to the other 60 subjects on this sheet.

When I put together my all-SOVEREIGN set in 2007, this series of 66 cards were my toughest to find. I recall that the cards of Joe Doyle, Patsy Dougherty, Bob
Rhoades, Joe Tinker, and Doc White were the last 5 cards to complete my (402-card) set.

Hey guys

I recommend trying for an all SOVEREIGN (402-card) set....for it is likely the least expensive major T206 sub-set to complete. Consider this....no Joe Doyle (Nat'l),
Elberfeld (Washington), Lundgren (Cubs), Magie, Plank, Wagner, nor the St Louis variations of Demmitt & O'Hara, nor the 48 Southern Leaguers. Why not try it.....
you'll enjoy the challenge.

Anyway, I'd like to hear of your experiences collecting these special SOVEREIGN apple green cards. And, show and/or tell us of what you have ?

Henry

I started my Sovereign set in 2006 and completed it 11 months later in 2007.

I wasn't the winner of that "big group of ~350 SOVEREIGN" cards that you mentioned.

When was that auction ?

I forgot the name of that auction house but I kind of remember that's from the same company who owned PSA.

Default Chris

The list I posted in Post #8 applies strictly to the 350-only Series cards.

The Liebhardt card is in the 150/350 Series. In this series there are approx. 80 subjects that were printed with both the SOVEREIGN 150
and SOVEREIGN 350 "forest green" backs.

Ha, Ted. I am sure you have touched on it before, but I was curious as to why in all the Green apples their are only three portraits and the rest action shots, and those three happen to be Super Prints. Do you have any theories on this. Thanks again. Dennis.

I'm glad you asked............

1st....my theory regarding why all 60 of these guys are action poses is that these cards were designed and printed at the tail-end of the 350 Series run ..Circa Summer/Fall of 1910.
Remember, American Litho. had printed the portraits of the majority of these guys in their 150 Series and the earlier printings of the 350 Series.

2nd....the 6 super-prints were originally printed in one of the very early press runs of the 350 Series; therefore, Chance, Chase, and Cobb are portrait poses. And, of course, Evers
and Matty portraits were portrayed in the 150 Series.

And then, American Litho. chose to re-print these 6 guys in this group of 66 subjects.

Default The mystique of the SOVEREIGN 350 "apple green" cards......let's see some cards

I was asked.....why only 402 (different) cards in a complete SOVEREIGN set ? After all, SOVEREIGN is a major T206 brand.

The anwer is simple, there are exactly 122 subjects that were NOT printed with the SOVEREIGN advertisement.

So, for you set collectors on this forum....try the challenge of the SOVEREIGN set, here is the 402 card Checklist............

Default The mystique of the SOVEREIGN 350 "apple green" cards......Show us your green apples

The biggest challenge I had in putting together this SOVEREIGN set was determining the SOVEREIGN NO-PRINTS (N-P). The subjects I refer to as the "Big Seven"
and the 48 Southern Leaguers were obvious N-P. By November 2007, I was confident I had figured out the remaining subjects that American Litho. did NOT print
with the SOVEREIGN back. So, I published my list of 122 subjects.

Seven years have transpired since then....and, it certainly appears that my N-P list has withstood the test of time. These 122 NO-PRINTS are identified here......

The "BIG SEVEN" NO-PRINTS......

Demmitt (St Louis American)
J. Doyle (N.Y. Nat'L)
Lundgren (Cubs)
Magie
O'Hara (St Louis Nat'l)
Plank
Honus Wagner

350-only Series NO-PRINTS (65 subjects)......

Abstein
Adkins
Arrellanes
Barbeau
Barger
Becker
Bliss
Brashear
Bresnahan (bat)
Burchell
Charles
Clark
Clymer
J. Collins (Minn.)
Cross
Davidson
Delehanty (Louisville)
Demmitt (New York American)
Dessau
Dorner

Downey (fielding)
Elberfeld (portrait-Washington)
Engle
Evans
Fletcher
Freeman
Ganzel
Graham (St Louis AL)
Gray
Groom
Hayden
Hoffman (St Louis AL)
Hunter
Jones (portrait Detroit)
La Porte
Lattimore
Lord
Lundgren (Kansas City)
Maddox
Maloney

Marshall
Mattern
McAleese
McBride
McElveen
McLean
Milan
Miller (Pittsburg)
Mullen (portrait)
Murray (bat)
Myers (bat)
Nattress
Phillippe
Puttman
Rhodes
Ritter
Rudolph
Schirm
Schlafly
Schreck

Shannon
Sharpe
Snodgrass (bat)
Starr
Willett

460-only Series NO-PRINTS......

Kleinow (Boston)
Smith (Chicago & Boston)

And, the 48 Southern Leaguers are NO-PRINTS.

Hope you don't mind Ted, but the only thing I can contribute to this thread is a Sovereign with a crop line.

Upper left corner on the back.

Default Hey Jantz

Your inputs are always welcome.

I'm still looking for 2 (different) name cards from the 350/460 series. Especially with SOVEREIGN backs.

Have you seen any lately ?

Please contact me if you do.

Best regards good buddy,

Hi Ted

I've seen quite a few two same name T206s from the 350-460 series, but never a two different name from the 350-460 series.

Can't recall ever seeing a two same namer with an apple green Sovereign back either, I do have scans of two forest green Sovereigns.

Here is a few.

Until I read this thread I didn't understand what an "apple green" Sovereign looked like.

Hi

Very nice looking Joss.....however, this card's back is not apple green.

The Joss (portrait) was printed in the 150/350 series. All the backs of the cards in this series are the normal green color.

Joss (pitching) has a SOVEREIGN 350 apple green back.

Please check-out the 66-card apple green checklist (Post #27).

Thanks for displaying your card.

Ha, Ted as far as toughness goes in what order would you rank the Sovereigns from 1 to 4 in you experiences putting the sets together? Thanks. Dennis.

An interesting question, Dennis

I'll describe my experience which will not be typical.

In November of 2006, I had completed my all-PIEDMONT set of 519 cards. I really enjoyed the challenge of that project, so I got started on an all SOVEREIGN set
with only 22 Sovereign cards in my collection. But, I was very lucky. Barry Sloate had acquired a collection of 300+ Sovereign cards. I won 262 cards from Barry's
auction.
Eleven months later, November 2007, I completed the Sovereign set of 402 different cards. Plus, an additional 6 cards of the rare SOVEREIGN 460 versions of the
six Super-Prints.

So, I really cannot give you an accurate number of how tough it is to put together this set. I'm sure it would have taken me several years to complete it, if I had
not acquired those 262 Sovereign cards. However, I can tell you that the toughest part of completing this set will be the "hunt" for these 66 "apple green" cards.

Anyway, on any given day on Ebay, there are 200+ assorted Sovereign cards to choose from. Furthermore, on occasion, Sovereign's show up in Auctions, or in BB
card shows. Therefore, I would suggest to anyone considering working on this Sovereign run of 402 cards, unless you are a very patient collector, wait for a large
"find" of Sovereign cards to surface and acquire them.

Default The mystique of the SOVEREIGN 350 "apple green" cards......Show us your green apples

Let's continue the conversation on this subject a little longer with this interesting bit of information.

OK, the 66 apple green Sovereign's represent 16.5% of the 402 cards in the Sovereign set.

Yet, on any given day on Ebay, there are 200 - 300 Sovereign cards listed. On the average, only 8% of these cards are the apple green cards.

This fact is statistically consistent with my earlier contention that these 66 subjects are considerably tougher to find than the other 336 cards
that make up this set.

Furthermore, data from large T206 surveys also support this premise.

Check out again my 66-subject list (Post #27), and you'll see that your Frank Smith (white cap) is on it.

Your Donohue is 150/350 subject and cannot have an apple green back. It's back is normal green.

And, a big THANKS for posting your Cobb with the two same names. I like this "gem" because it lends credence
to the Double-Printing of the six super-prints that I have diagramed in my hypothetical 72-card sheet

Rob was correct regarding Donohue. Donohue was missing in my SOVEREIGN 150 list in Post #21.
I have since added him to the list.

Thanks Rob for noting that omission.

Default Apple Green

Ted,

This is my only example:

Murphy_Batting__Sovereign_350_Apple_Green_Back_SGC_60.jpg

Murphy_Batting__Sovereign_350_Apple_Green_Front_SGC_60.jpg

As a side note has anyone else noticed that a large % of the Apple Green Sovereign backs appear to have product stains. It's as if they were packaged a little differently and came more in contact with the product.

Thanks,

Jerry

I went thru my entire SOVEREIGN set (and 42 duplicates), but noticed only 6 cards that had a hint of tobacco staining on the backs of them.

Here's the Series breakdown of these 6 cards......

2....150 series

2....350 series (normal green)

1....350 series (apple green)

1....460 series
