Default G'Day! Australian Baseball Cards ?

Posted By: Jason L

All,
While perusing one of the board member's rather extensive list of type cards in his collection, I noticed a surprising entry (McRobertsons Australian Base Ball).
I was not aware of any baseball card or memorabilia issues from Down Under, and I would be very interested to hear about them if anyone has specific knowledge they would like to share.
I lived down there for a couple years (for work reasons), but it was during one of my "off-again" periods from the collecting hobby, so that combined with the prominence of cricket made me just assume there was nothing of interest there....apparently I was wrong.

Any one have any Australian Baseball in their collection???
Please share pics and knowledge!!!

Thanks,
Jason L

I lived in Australia (Brisbane) as a kid. There have been a few Australians who have played in the modern US Majors, including a current outfielder prospect for the Mariners. I saw a cricket match, but no baseball. Presumably, there is some decent baseball playing going on for them to export legitimate Major Leaguers like Graeme Lloyd and Dave Nilsson (1990s Brewers All-Star catcher).

Australian has a long history of baseball, although minor in scope to cricket, rugby and whatever that strange game is they play in the south. I have a couple of real photo postcards from 1910 or so of Australian baseball teams which I'll post from home tonight. I didn't find any vintage Australian baseball cards when I was there in 2004, but I wouldn't be surprised if some exist in some form or other.

Very nice cards. Thanks for posting
How did you learn about these issues, and what led you to include them in your collection? Do you collect international issues?

Here's another one I just picked up...from Australia, I am told, and believe. I also was told it's circa 1936. With the 48 stars on the flag I guess it's possible. As far as what I collect, I am a "type card" collector, meaning I want one card from each set. Since I am down to a handful of US cards needed I have branched out a little. Though this is generic it's kind of neat.....

to a somewhat obscure topic...in case anyone out there didn't see my original post at the beginning of the month...thanks to Leon and Max...I hope to continue researching this niche in the future, so if anyone has any tips on collecting international issues, please share!
Thanks,
Jason L

You know, the 1888-89 World Tour ballplayers stopped in Australia to play baseball, and there is a spectacular poster from that event. I believe it was pictured in Spalding's book, but no original has yet been found.
