Default To grade or not to grade, T206 Cobb style...

Posted By: Scott S

I just picked up the pictured Cobb Bat On card, and usually gets cards such as this graded when I acquire them.

I would consider the card to be VG, as there are no creases to be found. There are two very small spots of paper loss on the back.

After reading the other thread regarding raw vs. graded, it now has me wondering whether I should send this card in after all, because of the back.

Will I get the VG grade I would like from SGC? Will this be downgraded to a 30 or 20 because of the back?

Let me know your thoughts; thanks!
Scott

i dont think you'll get a 40 with the paper loss...most likely a 30.

I'll say you'll get an SGC 30 as well. You could likely get a 2.5 or 3 with PSA.

I have EX-MT front card with a small speck of paper loss sitting in an SGC 40 holder. So based on your corners I would be surprised if you didn't end up with a 30 albeit nice looking 30

Why not leave it raw until you get ready to sell it, if the sale is to a buyer who wants it graded??

That way you keep the 'grading' money in your pocket, and you can buy more cards.

Forgetting about the cards in the plastic, ever wonder how much money some folks have spent on slabbing and postage to get the slabbing???

great looking card.
congrats!
sgc will give it a 30 rather than a 40 solely because of the paper loss methinks.

best,

barry

Scott - nice pickup - while you'd have a better chance with PSA, I think it's likely that SGC would give that a 3; the paper loss seems very minimal.

I too feel its a nice looking SGC 30. Maybe would be a PSA/BVG 2.5

if you have no intentions of selling it, who cares if its a 10 or 30 or 80 - its the same card no matter what SGC/PSA/BVG thinks.

Scott,
Nice looking card. Are you sure it's all there? It looks a little short and the bottom border looks a little fishy.

Thanks for all of the feedback. The card is from a very old collection, of which many other cards have graded out fine with no problems. The bottom border seems OK in person, and it measures up OK.

Although I don't intend to sell this card now, I do like to have them slabbed, so I will have the flexibility to sell it more easily if I so decide. I'll have to decide how comfortable I'll feel with the likely 30 grade that it would receive.

Thanks,
Scott
