Default Large photos/supplements?

Posted By: Rob

I'm not very familiar with whats available for football stuff, I'm more on the vintage baseball side. I am into the 1909-13 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements and was wondering if there is anything similar for football? Not looking for any specific time frame. Mainly larger photos/supplements that are around 8x10.

thanks!
Rob

I think the closest we have in football is the National Chicle 1935 R311 - which is the same size as the baseball r311 but only comes in a glossy finish - no leather finish.

Rob,

Many of the team-issued sets of the late 40's through the 60's were approximately 8" x 10". The Detroit Press issued a few supplements in the 30's of Dutch Clark. The 1932 Denby Premium (Chicago Bears Team photo) is one of my favorites. It was released by Denby Cigars who sponsored radio broadcasts of the Bears games.

That 1932 Bears photo is of interest to me - I have one that is more than a regular glossy photo - I would describe it as linen-backed. It belonged to my father, so I believe is from that time - it looks just like the cigar premium with the team names, but there is no other text. Anyone else ever see one like that?

Neat item Mike. I always wondered looking at the Denby where the photo was taken...looks to be Wrigley?

Oddly enough that photo was used to make many of the silver bordered matchcovers.

Goes to show how rare those images were even then. One photo used to make probably the whole Bears portion of the set.

That is a very good observation. I worked in a newspaper darkroom in the mid 1970s and look with great admiration at the high quality hand-done masking and coloring that took those images from the team photo and put them on the matchcovers - It would be hard enough with a computer, but those old timers were using nothing but a brush and a pair of sissors!
