I put in a bid on this card long, long ago. And for some reason my bid held up. Am I missing something? Or did I just win a $5K card for $1400?

I don't know if it's a $5000 card but it seems you won it for $1400, congrats!

Well PSA SMR puts it at $4500, and I don't think I've ever seen an 8 sell for book value, always well above...am I crazy that this closing price is WAY off of its true value?

There was a PSA 7 not too long ago on eBay that went for just over 1500 so based on that I would say you did ok. However, and I know this is going to go over really big on this board, the SGC 88 appears small and the upper right and bottom left corners look irregular. Dunno. Maybe it is just the scan provided.

I think that is a great card and a great deal. One guess is that the PSA registry folks may not have thought it would cross to an 8 with that centering.

Boy, there were some low numbers last night in Mastro (of course the one card I wanted I bid up to an astronomically high price and still didn't get it). I guess this means that the market in vintage cards is going down. Yeah, I'm sure that's what it means.

Jeff, I'm not so sure the market is going down. I heard a rumour that a couple of bidders who were very active
in these auctions in the past were not participating this time around.

I assure you it was very hard for Jeff (hi Jeff) to tell that last night. He got smoked on the one card that went for about triple our estimate......At least he owes me one now ....

Yes, last night was fun. There was a card that both Leon and I wanted badly -- and I tried begging, pleading, arm twisting and finally employed extortion to get him to back off, which he kindly did. When the card reached 3x what we both independently thought it was worth -- and I was still the underbidder -- I graciously emailed Leon and informed him that the card was all his. I'm going to hope that Leon considers that good deed a payback for his good deed.

So now that it is over, Jeff or Leon, which Cobb card was it? Lot 28 per chance?

Just curious how you both independently decided that a unique (at this point) early Cobb card was only worth 3K? Seems like a low estimate even for 3 or 4 years ago when I was actively adding to my Wagner, Cobb and Jackson collection.

Greg, a couple of thoughts. First, while it's unique we've heard that before -- until another pops up. Second, it was 5 years away from his "first" cards of 1907. It wasn't an especially good looking PC and was not in great condition. Finally, and most importantly, the card was at 2100 or so during extended bidding (which is when we spoke). All those added up to around 3-3.5K in my mind with an idea it could go to 5K. Which of course it would have had either me or the person that won it didn't run it up to 11.4K.

Adding to Jeff's thoughts, I usually equate, right or wrong, Cobby and Wags as pretty close value to each other...respective of T206 of course. Recently I won the Harper Whisky Wags for around 2k so my thinking was more but not 5x on this one....Of course it went where it did so there ya' go. I have seen much crazier stuff.....regards

Well it is a good thing I am not collecting much these days or I would be chasing things at levels well above what they are "worth".

Well, if anyone wants to make me an offer on it, I'm all ears. I had no intention of winning it when I put in that price, but I am more than willing to sell for a small profit, and leave plenty of profit for someone else, should they want it.

JP, if you had no intention of winning it why did you continue to bid it up to a level of 4x what the card was at prior to the 30 minute rule period? And if you had no intention of winning it why did you put in a ceiling bid a couple bids higher than the last price -- deep into the 30 minute rule period? And how will selling it for even more money than what it went for leave plenty of profit for someone else? I'm not being a smartass; I'm just trying to understand what you wrote.

Jeff,

I think JP was referring to his original post about winning the T206 for $1400.

No, no Pirate....11.4k (after juice) was a little more than I wanted to go...I went up to 8k, without juice, and stopped....I did get the unidentified "Derbys".....as I said I don't think they are Derbys and I did say I was bidding on them, so 2-3 idiots didn't think I was trying to do something to keep folks from bidding....I wish I could get folks to not bid on what I want....Like Jeff did to me....

There are two known La Azora cards, but they have different poses. Here is the other one:

Jeff, you're confusing me with someone else. The only card I won was the Kleinow, and my bid sat at $1400 for over a week. I can't believe I got that price. I was only bidding on the auction so that the catalogues would continue to come in for free...

EDIT: Oh, I see now someone has cleared it up for you, and I see your comment too about it being a steal. I couldn't agree more. Just wasn't prepared to have to pay for a win.
