Default Trade Deadline

Anyone else surprised that the A's would give up Cespedes in order to acquire Lester?

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

It was shocking to see at first. But then I started thinking about it and I really respect the A's for doing it given it's for a 2 month or so rental. It's WS or bust for them this year.

Cespedes is what? A .260 hitter wit 30 HR potential but with relatively high strike outs and low OPB. Not exactly "Moneyball" material.

Yes, they will not be able to replace his power numbers, but Gomes does tear up lefties with a .400+ OPB this year. And they acquired Sam Fuld for a platoon. He's a decent player who's also a decent fileder and baserunner.

I think adding Lester to go along with Kazmir, Samardzija and Sonny Gray gives them a very solid rotation for October.

Wow the Sox are going for it. Was looking to get almost all future prospects for Lackey and a 3 month rental Lester. To be getting everyday players back, especially middle of the order guys, is a pleasant surprise to me. Cespades does K quite a bit but the Sox have a huge power need now and in the minors. Can move Pedroia down, or to 2`nd hole and the Sox can still go after Stanton and WILL go out and get a decent # 1 pitcher. Sox nation is pleasantly surprised and I say pleased with today. Lester was gone, no thanx to the sox front office, but they weren`t going 150 + on him and I think the Yanks will. Now at least the next 2 months will be very interesting as will 2015 !

That was my initial impression too. The A's have always been thought as a bridesmaid but now they want to be the bride!

i figure beane felt that lester over the rest of this season and presumably into the playoffs is more valuable than cespedes the rest of this year and all of next year. I think if cespedes was not going to be a free agent after next season, beane would not have traded him.

i was more surprised by russell trade last month.

Unbelievably bad trade for the Rays. Wow. And now the Tigers have the last 3 Cy winners in their rotation!
