We found the bidding in last evening's Goodwin auction to be very competitive particularly on the four items on which we were bidding.

I can see why you wanted that Pennock. It is a REALLY nice looking card for a 5 and from a condition sensative set.

The Doyle T206 SGC authentic went for $186K!! Seeing how REA sold an SGC 50 for $329K last year, I initially thought it wouldn't go that high, but I guess it had a nice appearance.

It's not prewar, but I was shocked to see the SGC 30 1952 Topps Mantle go for $10,555. It looked to be pretty harshly graded, but I was surprised to see it go that high.

That's about 50% higher than it should be, but the flowery prose WAS well written!

High price but that card had the visual appeal of a much nicer card, imo. The centering was almost the best I have ever seen on a '52 mantle. If I had an extra 10k I might have been a bidder. It is a really nice card..

I'm shocked....utterly shocked ! ! To hear that you are interested in a 1952 Topps Mantle

I pulled this one from a 5-cent pack in the Fall of '52. To me it's priceless. But, if I ever decide to trade
or sell it, I will let you have 1st crack at it.

ATTICS........that is the secret of BB card survival. All my BB, FB, Boxing and Non-Sports card were out of sight in the attic
of my folks house for 20 years until I recovered them in the 1970's. Guys like this Mantle and my 1949 LEAF Babe Ruth were
treated with more respect than other cards.

wow...strong prices. i would have taken the scarce e102 wagner throwing card over the higher graded, more common batting pose...for a fraction of the price..but then again...who cares about e102's! And, WOW...a shonen's Ruth postcard for almost $500!!! You'd see them on ebay all day for 2-300 max? The economy seems fine in the vintage world!

That must have been amazing to experience pulling Mick's rookie out of that pack. My childhood pulls might have reached the pinnacle of Juan Gonzalez or Frank Thomas rookies. Oh, those sorry, overpriced pieces of junk.

ATTICS......that is the secret of LOST baseball cards also.....

my grandparents threw away any "junk of my parents" they found in their attics...cards included!

I guess I was lucky....since my folks put all my stuff from my youth up in the attic of our home when I was in the Air Force.
It was a big attic with a bedroom in it. And, it got pretty hot in the summer months.

My point simply is....that dry attics are a much better long-term storage place for cardboard collectibles than basements.

An attic is a significant portion of Ted's good fortune in retaining his cards. Key components, not to be overlooked, are a mother who allows accumulation instead of pitching stuff out, and not moving to another home. Families who move from time to time discard clutter. Moms and moving are the bane of a kid's card collecting. And we do love our Moms.

i was the not so sensible one--selling them, while in grad. school and newly married ,for very little.

Besides being just about the same age, from the same area of the country and having very similar late '40's-'50s collections from our youth--yet another likeness surfaces!

All my cards (along w/ all my other "stuff") were stored in cigar boxes, then into whiskey cases and into the cool, dry attic off the bathroom when I left home for the South in 1958.

I had told my Mother to leave my "junk" alone and when I returned back North in the '80s everything was just as I left it! The card boom had started & I eventually dug everything out, sorted into sets and proceeded to get back in the hobby.

I have been selling 1950's Sport & Non-Sport duplicates & unwanteds on EBay since 2001 while retaining just about all of my early sets.

Even though the topic has dramatically changed from Bruce's thread starting post, I did have a response for him. In the past I've thought that some Goodwin results were crazy high. But this time it looks like there were numerous deals to be had, especially in T-206. Somebody won a PSA 5 Elberfeld for half the price that the same card went for on eBay last week. What gives?

i agree, some very strong prices, but there were also some deals to be had...i was watching that Elberfeld, but forgot to bid, as i was out the other night...looks like someone did get a great deal on it.

regarding attics & moms:

i'm an only child (and italian), so as you may imagine, EVERYTHING from my childhood has been perfectly preserved by my mother (god bless her). my bedroom at my parents house is virtually untouched. so all of my 80's & 90's cards (from my childhood) are intact and waiting for me, whenever i may need them...too bad i didn't grow up in the 50's...if so, i'd have tons of mantles & mays', rather then van poppel's & dykstra's

Just make sure you keep a lid on the box. I did not & my cat used it as a litter box!
