Probably an easy one for you guys, but I'm not familiar w/ them, so thought I would ask here. Someone on EBay was asking about them--says some of them have "1908" written on the blank backs.

I could be dead wrong, but I think Frank Ward had an uncut sheet of those things for awhile and was trying to figure out what they were.

These might be from the 60s. There was an Ebay auction a while back selling a sheet and describing it as a 60s product. I saved the description/picture somewhere and will post both when found.

These are called 1972 Classic Cards. They were apparently made in 4 series of 30 cards each and may have been cut from a single sheet. Most all players are from the 1900-1909 era. Pretty hard to find really. I have 3 Cardinals from the set and it took me a long time to find them, I still need 2 more. My cards measure 2 5/8x4 1/8" and show more border. I think yours are trimmed on the top and sides. They list an address of PO Box 653, Flint, MI 48501 on the back. Cards are all sepia. Randy

Here is a pic of the backs. The owner says they measure about 1 1/4 x 3 and the 1908 is penciled on the reverse on several of them

The "cards" pictured above are not from the 1972 set mentioned above. They are really from 1908 but not really cards. They are cut outs from Leslie's Weekly newspaper. There were multiple (approx. 10) pictures of players with their teams and positions listed below them per sheet. There are no lines or instructions explaining how to cut them out so I wouldn't call them cards but just photographs cut from a newspaper. They are really from 1908, however.

Thanks alot Zach & Steve!! I knew someone would nail them---I will pass on your information!

Add On: They DO seem to be on a thin cardboard as opposed to newspaper thin--are they NOT?

Hello all,

Could they be reprints of the pictures in the magazine? If they were from the magazine, it seems they would have writing or a part of a picture on the back. Also, wouldn't they be on paper and not cardboard?

Just wondering,

David

as the original Leslies are on newspaper stock and have other printed matter on the next page.

These are later reprints using a cardboard stock. Not too difficult to create.

Zach, your right, I stand corrected. I'll try to post a scan of a 1972 Classic card here, I haven't been successful at that yet. It looks like the 1972 set design may have been created from this 1908 magazine issue.
