The Card That Started It All.

As in the first card you acquired from a set that started that drive to complete it.For me it was a random Ebay search one day that lead me to a nice albeit overpriced T210 Titman Richmond Colt.I really liked the look of the card and posted here on the B/S/T for one and met a outstanding boardmember who gave me a great deal.Once I had that card in hand,acquiring the series and then the set was decided upon.

What was your first pickup from some of you favorite sets your working on/completed?

A sovereign backed hobby T205 that I though I overpaid for. It resides in a SGC 5 holder now and started my obsession.

This Mack was the 1st of my E98s. I got this back in 1999 from Slater's Americana in a group of rough E98s. Over the years, I have collected and sold off many E98s, but out of my future Master Set, this is the only original one that I have always saved. I call it the "Anchor Man" of my set. It was the 1st of my now 108 different E98s. Only 12 more to go. If you have one of the 12 that I still need (check out the BST for my want list) please contact me! Not really one big deal card for me, but a few small ones.

First pack, 1969. I got Reggie, and remember dad saying "hey he's pretty good!" That stuck with me, but oddly I bought none in 70, one pack in 71, and none in 72? Weird.

Then 1974 and the Hank Aaron specials. I knew there were older cards, since I had some as old as 1969, but those really made it interesting. Traded for a 1968!

Then I moved to a town with a card store. With T206s, T205s, Goudeys, Old Judges! And it's been downhill since

May 27, 2004 off eBay. Started me on my pre-war HOF collection (adding to the post-war stuff from my childhood).

... two of them, raw, for next to nothing in 1991 (who would bother collecting black and white cards from such a tiny set??)... when I sent them in for grading, and they came back 8s, I thought I could assemble a really nice set of them, relatively cheaply (no major HOFers in the set), which I did.... that very first 36G purchase lead me immediately to other pre-war cards and sets, starting with Sports Kings, and its history from there...

The card(s) that started it all was a buy it now of a 1948 Bowman Enos Slaughter signed rookie for $50, and a 1950 Bowman Bob Lemon signed card for $20.

Gift from my dad as we were scouring an antique shop in Snohomish, WA (home of Earl Averill) when I was 12 years old.

It wasn't my first ever pre-war card (that distinction belongs to a T206 Titus and a 1933 Goudey Pepper Martin--long ago traded the Titus but kept the Martin).

My first two T206s. I like 14 years old and road my bike over 10 miles to a local card shop. Got the Schafly first, then went back for the Bush a week later. Didn't know anything about the set except that it was the same one of the famous Honus Wagner card. I didn't buy another T206 for 17 years. Now, I'm three cards shy of completing the set.

Dont have the card(s) anymore...but:
One day,mid 80s,my dad brought out his tattered collection of 33/34 Goudeys he had collected as a youth. I had stopped collecting cards when I started college almost 10 yrs earlier.
Seeing these fueled my passion again,and he mentioned that one of his former students had a card shop in town. I visited,and immediately bought a 53 Kiner,53 Paige,couple of 48 Bowmans and some random 52s. I then went fullbore into vintage and not-so-vintage collecting for almost 20 years.

My mom's great uncle was a pitcher for Brooklyn in early century (Nap Rucker);I've posted this before. Family visited him right before he died down south in my youth (when I was heavily into playing youth baseball and buying Topps packs;around early 70s),and he showed me and my brother his shirt,cap,and tattered glove (hanging in a barn on his estate). In an album in a cabinet in his office,he showed us some of his early T cards and foldouts,one of which I still have today. This visit was personally responsible for my lifelong interest in the game and its history; my dad showing me his Goudeys (which I hadnt seen since I was a child) rekindled my interest in sportscards in general.

I dont buy much anymore,and have been cherry-picked out of most of my valuable vintage cards/sets....but I still love cards and will always...vintage and not-so-vintage!

Not pre war but a 1966 Topps Tom Sestak card. I am an avid Bills fan and never forgot that pack. I completed the set a few years ago and find upgrades every now and then. The card that started my pre war obsession was a T206 Buffalo card in 2005. It is in a PRO holder. . Found this forum not long after and about 120 T206's and 30 or so turn of the century RPPC'S of baseball teams later here I am. BTW, for some reason I never bought another card in a PRO holder again. . No worries though, the card only grades a 5.
