Default So long Chuck.

As a lifetime Pirate fan, Chuck was the perfect Coach at the perfect time for the Pirates in the late 70s. Quick story, two (or three, the losing seasons are starting to blend together) seasons ago, I was in a row seat in a section behind home plate at PNC Park. Zack Duke gave up a dong late in the game to lose the lead. I put both hands over my face and shook my head. I felt a hand on my shoulder and a voice said, "Hang in there." I looked up and it was Chuck, wearing a big, floppy, bucket hat, walking back to the concourse. Truly an ambassador for the great game of baseball.

I remember as a kid watching Chuck Tanner manage the Pirates to a World Series championship in 1979. That Pittsburgh TV station (WKDA, maybe?) was one of the only channels that showed baseball games. I will never forget Chuck or the great Pirates team of 1979. I heard yesterday that Chuck's mother died after the fourth game of that World Series. The Pirates were behind at that point 3 games to 1. Chuck stayed with the team and they won the next three games. No doubt the team "was playing for Chuck" for those three games.
