Default Aroldis chapman trade

I want to know what everyone thought of this trade.
I'm a reds fan for over 30 years and this trade really pissed me off with jocketty getting nothing for a all star closer.
I get that chapman was in his last year of his contract and his legal issues but all they had to do was wait for the possible sudpension.
Jocketty held onto chapman at last season's trade deadline when the reds could have gotten a very nice package for him.
I feel they basically got back a water cooler and a bag of balls in the trade.

I would agree with you. If I recall, they got two top 10 and another two top 30 Yankees prospects. That's not really a lot, maybe one pans out and another can fit into the lineup for a few years, but yea, for a stud liek Chapman, it's not a lot.
The liking suspension brought down his value. The fact that he will get paid at least $8 million brings down his value. A stud closer is more valuable to a playoff team. Right now, nobody knows who that is and only the richest teams (aka Dodgers, Yanks, maybe a few others) can take that risk of $8mil.

Lastly, the last thing a crappy team that is trying to rebuild needs is bad PR and bad locker room chemistry. Chapman was both. Other teams knew that and probably took advantage of the situation.

my 2 cents.

I never thought is was more complicated than a response to the Red Sox getting Kimbrel.

Very sad to see him go. I live about 125 miles north of Cinci and I doubt that with the way they are unloading everyone that I will bother to make the drive to see any games next year. At least we still have the Bengals. At least until tomorrow night.

Yankees fan here so I'm happy they aquired him! They have a three headed monster now. Only problem is they have to get to the back half of the game with their starting pitchers.

Some teams are acquiring closers, and it seems like that is going to create confusion when it comes to player role. The Nats pen last year was the perfect example, now the Yankees this year. Really a bit of a mess. Is Chapman the setup guy and Miller closes? Miller was outstanding and the incumbent, Chapman is the new guy. Yankees would have been smarter to get a lights out middle reliever and give them the 7th inning.

Chapman is the closer. Miller already agreed to be a setup man and encouraged the trade.

Betances can get a little wild sometimes and seems more comfortable in a setup / innings eater role anyways.

I think as advanced statistics become more and more prominent in salary negotiations, it will become less and less important who is actually racking up the saves in a relief role. These guys will get paid one way or the other, and they are more and more aware of that now.

Thanks for the insight. Miller is getting paid, and he is certainly being the team player thus far.
