Question for some more experienced collectors. What are the signs that this is a fake? Like to know for my own knowledge

Train your eyes. Every day. It doesn't happen overnight.

You may not like my reply, but that's how it works.

One day, if you train your eyes long enough, it will just click.

I'm sure there are many other obvious reasons why this Mantle is fake but one thing that jumps out at me is it looks like the Mantle is sitting much higher than the Mickey. The first and last name don't flow and look as if the forger paused after writing the first name....imagine that

2nd "M" shows shaky slow characteristics... How often do you slowly sign the 1st letter of your signature?

Now think about a time you would when you are being paid by the autograph and the faster you sign, the quicker you get done.

thought I would mention that most GOOD mantles have the M in his last name on a higher plane than the M in the first name. This has to do with the transitional point from where the y in mickey ends.

Maybe some of the more experienced guys can back me up on this since I had it wrong to begin with.

Kevin R I am new to autos as well. I look very closely at the very first stroke of the first M. It is a downstroke that should go straight down or to the right. Many fakes that downstroke takes off to the left before curving right. This is commonly seen in most of the Florida fakes. This is not the only thing to look for and the rule is probably not perfect, but if I see that first stroke variation I would probably stay away from that auto if it were me or get more experienced help.

That is what they teach you in forensic school.

Are you talking about the off-shore ones, or the 'real' ones where you can actually become an expert?

Unfortunately that technique only works for some people. If you don't have the basic potential, all the training in the world isn't going to help you.
