Default How could PSA Grade this Mantle???????

As many of you know, I am NOT a graded collector nor a fan of TPG's. Here is one reason why. How could PSA grade this card????? NOT AUTHENTIC, but a VG 3!!!!

It is cut way down and missing the frame!!

See the graded one first, then what it really looks like.

Not sure "how," but I know "why." PSA and the others will grade anything for the right price.

I was a bit surprised when I was this a couple of years ago. I wonder if this is the only way it will fit in their holders? I actually like it better, and the colors on the PSA one are great. Of course, I would never trim mine down.

Get in touch with PSA and have them buy it back, and regrade it correctly.

SGC did it with mine yrs ago. Of course, mine had the picture frame/borders. It got a numerical grade. The slab was barely large enough for it.

I have a hard time even classifying that as a card. Post even calls its a photo.

It is the only way it will fit in the PSA slab. Otherwise they just wouldn't grade them.

The hobby would be much better if they didn't grade things that wouldn't fit without trimming.

That's nothing, PSA has been giving numerical grades to magazine cuts. At least this was meant to be cut out as a card. But it should grade "authentic" with that type of trim.

The 1960 Post Cereal are indeed cards, just not in the usual connotation of what most collectors handle. The company may have called it a "photo"; however, a year earlier the Bell Brand company, in an original advertisement I own from a Los Angeles Rams program, shouted out in its ad, "ACTION PHOTOS OF L. A. RAMS NOW INSIDE BELL BRAND PACKAGES". Collectors have never called those "photos", have they? A further example comes from my book research. I ferreted out an original Safeway Supermarket advertisement placed in the April 29, 1959 LONG BEACH (CALIFORNIA) PRESS-TELEGRAM. Among the listed items were

"Cheesefurters

Morrell Pride

Hey Kids!

A Free Picture of Los Angeles Dodger in Every Package"

The cost of the single package to present one "free prize" 1959 Morrell Dodger "picture" I will withhold, as well as the Morrell Polish Sausage listing. You're gonna have to buy my book to get the rest of the information and accompanying insight.

Many assume PSA knows everything about the cards they grade. They do not. There are some hand-cut regional / food issues that seem to befuddle them; however, it is only due to lack of knowledge. I should think they would be open to elucidation. Also, I would think PSA's 8 X 10 photo holder would do for the full-size 1960 Post Cereal card in a pinch. However, the graded picture-only piece of the card should assuredly be given only the AUTHENTIC branding.

I remember seeing on PSA's web site the very card Fred is referencing, and rolling my eyes.

SGC did a fabulous job of authenticating mine at the 2008 National Convention in Chicago. The card JUST FIT their over-sized holder. Apparently, it was the first time they had taken on the task of grading one of these majestic cards, the post-war equivalent of a T-3. For a while they didn't think they could, but they gave it a try. I still am cheering.

Yep, the rookie Ryan:

They also slabbed a magazine ad of him:

You bring up the Ryan, but the newspaper Sports Stamps issues are also graded from the 1930s. So there is precedent for grading newspaper cuts. The main question is whether or not the cut is intended to be clipped and collected. If the Ryan was not intended to be collected, I would agree with you that it's in error.

Maybe that's what happened to the mastero Wagner, PSA was like it has to be trimmed in order for us to grade it.lol

Agree. I don't understand why they don't just make larger slabs like SGC. They can't even grade the 54 All star photo pack but they grade small cutouts from transogram boxes...and coasters and business cards etc

Then you should agree on the Ryan, as it was not intended to be cut--it was part of a story. How PSA does not know that, or at least that there are no Sporting News stamps with which this might be confused, is inexcusable. And then there's the magazine ad.

Default PSA is a VERY imperfect company

With a VERY imperfect system. That said, most including myself choose to send them money to grade what we send them to keep their system profitable and going. That said, I accept their imperfection - kick and scream at them (translated - respectfully communicate with them) when I believe they have done something imperfect and hope for the best. On the sell side, I have made money thanks to PSA. On the buy side - as has been stated countless times - buy the card, not the holder!! All of that said - that Ryan cutout is beyond ridiculous. As is the magazine cut out, the post Mantle, the piecing out of the 68 Bazookas and Transogram boxes, etc.
