I think Brian's point is that you depend on grading companies to be consistent and grade cards in a reasonable and correct manner. If you bought this card sight unseen relying on "PSA 4 (MK)" I am sure you would have cardiac arrest. This should have been "authentic" or PSA 1 at best.

The good news: That's Red Ruffing's scribble on the front of the card.

At least they put the MK qualifier on the slab, the OP could have done the same with his title.

Or at the very least explained what he was getting at, or does he have you do that for him all the time?

Don't ya think?

Steve

edited to add: smiley face here

Edited again: The seller could have included the MK in his title as well.

Communication.............

the super high brightness on the front doesn't jive well with the white borders, but judging by the back scan the corners are at least VG with the rounding if the card doesn't have any creases. the writing is terribad and distracting...too bad.

Steve,

I think from looking at the picture and the grade given the card, my point was obvious and didn't need an accompanying statement.

The card is a "1" given the writing.

I question this grade as well, but anybody that would buy a card with an MK qualifier sight unseen is an idiot. Anyway, anybody who buys that one off ebay clearly sees what the MK refers to.

Jim- I agree completely, the point I was making was that IF someone had purchased a PSA 4 MK card sight unseen (and I agree I wouldn't buy a MK qualifier without knowing exactly why it had the MK qualifier), he would not reasonable assume that he was getting something with this distracting and degrading of a "mark." Usually you see a small pen notation on the back of a card giving it a PSA MK qualifier. To me, it should be graded "authentic" as this is much more disturbing aestheticaly than a beautiful front with major paper loss on the back which gets an automatic "authentic" grade.

I agree with Bob. That's an "Auth" at best.

It's just PSA's grading scale - MK means a mark no matter what the size and an Authentic grade has nothing to do with the aesthetics. Usually, the marks are smaller, but that doesn't mean that is how PSA defines an MK qualifier.

Actually in this case PSA describes the card perfectly. The card without the marking is likely vg/ex right?

This card will sell for 1/Auth money, but to me the grade is accurate.

Newport Beach, Ca. - With the overwhelming success of the half grade by the grading industry leader, PSA is pleased to announce another small but needed change to our MK qualifier. Brought forth by a riveting discussion thread on the N54 vintage cards board we have been monitoring, the udpated scale will include the following:

MK -- small pencil mark
MK -- small pen mark
MK ^2 -- one word marking
MK ^ ~ ~ ~ -- 2 or more words marking

Our goal has always and will be to listen and accomodate collectors' needs and stay one step ahead in the ever-evolving graded cards market.

Excellent Quan.

Any chance we can get a special notation for Lou Gehrig cards with Red Ruffing's autograph on the back?

My thought exactly. And unless one sends it to SGC one has only opinion
on what they would grade it as.

I wouldn't buy any card sight unseen nor would prolly anyone on this board for that matter.

So what that has to do with anything is beyond me.
