1947 Jackie Robinson foul ball?
Hi all,
Here is a ball I am interested in. Supposedly the ball was fouled off by Jackie in a 1947 game against the Pirates. I inquired about the ball and the seller told me this, "Hello thanks for asking. So all I know is this ball was in my grandfather s house. He was born in 1918 I believe so if this was a foul ball from 1947 he would be 29 at the time. Our family is from near pittsburgh, so while I cant verify that this was a foul ball from 1947 hit by jackie robinson, it is aleast possible. I searched the ball online and it matches up with a 1943 ball when ford frick was commishioner. Im not sure how likely it is to be using a ball made in 1943 in 1947, but I suppose it s possible back then. While having a ball hit from Jackie Robinson in his rookie year seems highly unlikely it does say a foul ball instead of home run. I saw a Box score from a dodgers vs pirates game that he played in that year and Robinson did have a couple hits. I obviously cant prove its real and or ask him if he was there, but I do suspect that it is very possible this is infact a game used ball. I wish I had more info but thats what I know." After doing my own research it turns out that the ball is in fact a 1947-1948 ball, not 1943 as there are certian markings or lack thereof that identify this as the 1947-1948 model. And this ball in itself is worth $75-325. The only aspect that worries me is the clarity and sharpness of the writing on a ball caught 70+ years ago. Any and all opinions welcomed and appreciated! If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone trying to sell something they "found in Grandpa's closet" and "can't say for certain" but it "seems to be genuine"....
