Default Ebay sales tax issue?

Just made an purchase on Ebay and seller from Puerto Rico sent invoice to me in Massachusetts. I paid invoice and then realized I was charged sales tax. I have a sales tax resale number approved and on file with Ebay and after just getting off phone with the "ELITE" customer service at Ebay they said it was not their problem and that I needed to contact seller to get refund. Billion $$ company with state of the art software and they could not catch this? Thoughts?

I don't think ebay is collecting at all yet for Massachusetts. It wasn't as of last night anyhow.

When eBay collects sales tax it does not go to the seller. I never see that money when I sell. eBay collects it and holds it. So I don’t know what they want you to get from the seller.

Thanks for the post. I will be watching to make sure they don’t slip in any tax with my purchases.

I pretty much expect sales tax on retail internet purchases now.

Jeff is saying that he filed his tax resale cert with eBay as did I. That makes us exempt from paying sales tax on items we are reselling. I have not been charged tax since I filed. I wonder if tax was applied to all of Jeff’s purchases or just the one from Puerto Rico.

Default sales tax issue

I have bought 50+ items since registering my resale #. This is the only order that I have been charged sales tax on. Thanks, Jeff W

Seller has nothing to do with taxes collected. I've also noticed the amount Ebay charges for sales tax seems too high. I just purchased an item today for $9.99 and was charged 91 cents tax. That's over 9%. My state's rate is 6%.???

Probably need to include shipping to get to your 91 cents.

Since PR is not a US state things must work a different way there.
