Default 1930 W554's: Color/Script Variations...

Posted By: Brad Green

There are two variations of the 1930 W554 cards. Some cards have the name, position and team printed in the bottom border and some cards do not. I am not sure that all cards in the set come in both variations, but apparently many cards do come both ways. I recently picked up the variation of Lefty Grove without the script at the bottom. Both versions are shown below.

What is interesting is the color difference between the two cards. The card with the script is brown while the card without the script is black/white (I think). No matter what the color, it is easy to tell that there is a color difference.

So here's the question: Do all W554's come in both colors regardless of the script at the bottom or do all "scripted" cards come in brown and all "non-scripted" cards come in black/white?

I own 23 W554's. About 1/3 have a light brown tint, but not as pronounced as yours. The others are B&W for sure. However, I think all of them are printed with black ink. I thought for awhile that they came in both color variations, but under a microscope the ink looks black. Here's a pic of my "brownest" W554. The one card I have with no bottom script is Joe Judge, & it's easily B&W. (I only need O'Doul to complete the set, please help!)

Paul:

Thanks for your response. I sold a Grove W554 with the bottom script on eBay a few weeks ago and it was the same color as the W554 Grove with bottom script that I still have. When you get a chance, could you please look through your cards to see what color your Grove card is?

I have seen the Gehrig with and without the bottom script, but I can't remember what color the cards were.

Good luck finding the O'Doul card! Someone has got to have one for you...

Brad

Brad, here's my Grove. It's printed with black ink, but I think it's the card stock that gives it the brown appearance. Compare the backs of your two Groves, & you should see the difference. I have a scripted & unscripted Joe Judge. The unscripted card has a thinner & a fairly white looking card stock. The scripted card is of course thicker, with a "brownish" card stock.
