Default 1954 Topps Gray Backs

With the help of Al (ALR-bishop), I feel like I've been able to distinguish between the '54 Topps and the '54 Topps Gray Backs or '54 Topps Canadian.

However, this one that just surfaced on eBay leaves me a little baffled. SGC has the card labeled as a 1954 Topps Canadian, but the back has me questioning whether or not that label was a mistake. Thoughts?

I've attached a scan of the front and back of the card on ebay, and then a comparison of the backs that I have in my possession of the same card.

eBay card:

My two cards:

Cream-colored Back (regular '54):

Gray Back ('54 Topps Canadian)

Default Canadiens

I see what you mean Shaun. The SGC card looks more cream colored in the scan. But there was a thread here not long back about a 1952 House card that looked to be a yellow ( versus orange) lion gray back House, which would have been surprising because it was thought the variation only existed in the light back cards. Although the scans looked like it was a gray back, the owner finally decided that up front and personal it was not. It could be you would need to see the card itself or a better back scan to see if the grader was correct.

I have a handful of these - maybe a half dozen or 10.

Does anyone just collect the grey backs?

Al,

The seller put up a comparison scan - what are your thoughts?

Michael,

Do you have a Jackie Robinson?

Default Gray Backs

Michael---there are some master 52 and 54 set collectors who pursue them and cards in good shape usually go for a large premium on ebay, especially the 52s

Shaun---is the bottom one the SCG gray back from your first post ? In this scan it looks like it could be a gray back to me

The very last (bottom) scan from my first post is my Gray Back (ungraded)

The back SGC from my first post (2nd scan) is the same one as the one above the definitely cream-colored SGC from the comparison photo.

Default I've got one

I have 237 out o the 250 cards in this set. After reading this thread, I just had to check. I have exactly one grey back, #14 Preacher Roe. Should I call the boss and tell him that I retire?

Default Not quite yet

I'd wait til you find the t206 Hous Wagner in your collection before calling the boss. The Roe might only fill your gas tank. ;-)

Default Roe

You might get a raise if he collects gray backs himself and needs only Roe to complete the "set"

Default Sadly,that's what I thought...

,,,and anybody that knows this set can probably name 10 or more out of the 13 that I need to finish the set so my 54's themselves might finance a fat week of retirement...maybe
