Image doesn’t seem clear enough to be a type one photo. But could still be very old. I would note that I cannot think I have ever seen this image before.

Jason, thanks for the input. I will keep the post updated with what I can find after contacting some negro league historical centers.

Nothing from the Negro League Center in Cleveland yet. I wrote them an email and attached the picture but is was flagged as undelivered address. I did find this on Wikipedia so there cant be many as stated above.

"The Cleveland Tigers were a Negro league baseball team in the Negro National League, based in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1928. In their only season, they finished in seventh place with a 20-59 record."

So only one season!

This photo was on eBay a couple of years ago, never sold as it had a ridiculous asking price.
My opinion, and don’t quote me on it but I believe it’s a reproduction as was the one on eBay, probably the exact same one.
About 8-9 years ago or more there was a seller on eBay selling repro Negro baseball photos that were in old frames to make it look like they were really old and original and they all had this same look to them as the Tigers photo you have.
I want to say the seller was out of Ohio but not 100% sure.

Just my thoughts.
Steve

If you are worried about its authenticity, or type 1, type 2, contact a local university's photography/art department. Or even a local archive. They should have someone on hand to tell you something about how it was manufactured. Probably do it for free as well.

Thanks , I'm on the border of Ohio in Pennsylvania so it could be very possible. I will dig deeper to see if I can find it.

Default Dubious

My first thought was that it has that yellowed/faux-distressed look of other faked Negro League photos we've seen, but why would they do that with such an obscure team? Manny's spot of this item on eBay reinforces that initial impression that this is one of those. Another giveaway on that generation of fakes is the resolution, which is universally lousy on all of them and has an appearance never found on real photographs, or even legitimate copies of them.
