Wouldn't this fall into the category of "theoretical"? The most expensive sets don't exist in complete form. Are you asking what is the most expensive set one might be able to assemble or what is the most expensive set currently assembled?

Well there is a set of 50 or so (according to the back checklist) of which there are only 2 known examples. I would guess that if you had $100 million, and advertised your intentions so everyone in the US knows what you are looking for, you MAY get someone to find that lucky stash stored in an attic somewhere.

So that's my answer.

Regardless of how you define an Old Judge set that would be the answer. Even if it was one of each player, regardless of the pose, the California League cards and a few rare players would easily make it the winner.

Highest price paid that I know of was the 1914 CJ set for $800k.

A 1933 SK set sold for $360k about 2-3 years ago.

When Sportscardsplus sold the Harris Collection T206 set as individual cards in 1999, the total came to over $1 million. That was without a Wagner (or Doyle).

Im having difficulty figuring out if this question is asking about actual sales or hypothetical sales.

The single highest amount paid for a complete set (that Im aware of) is the 800k paid for the cracker jacks that were all in nearly perfect condition (displayed on sgc's website, I believe).

The Harris collection t206s cannot be counted as they were sold individually and not as a "set". As we all know, sets typically will sell for less than if each card was sold individually. With respect to the Harris coll. cards, IMO, if they were sold as a set many bidders who were interested in single cards and maybe had 5 to 10k to spend on a single high grade card would never have bid if it was a complete set that they knew would take several hundred thousand dollars to win.

i found a t206 set it has 520 of 524 the only 4 cards missing are the big four and it went for 220k

You are right about complete sets vs. the cumulative total of individual cards.

Though that set in REA was very nice, it was not close to the SCP Harris set. That set was almost all PSA 8s and 9s with a handful of lesser cards. It had PSA 9s of Cobb, Mathewson, Johnson, etc. It also had a PSA 7 Plank.

Once again, I would say that the t206 "set" that you reference is NOT the highest priced set ever sold.

The cards were sold individually and not as a set. If sold as a set, the final sales price likely would not have been as high.

Like Jay said, no matter how you slice or dice it, an N172 set would be the most expensive. Just the few California League players would put the set way beyond any others on that list. A complete set of poses and players does not exist, either does just a player set, so obviously one has never been sold. So the N172 "set" is theoretical. Also, the T206 "set" mentioned can not be considered a set at all. The cards were sold as single lots and not one group, and even if they were all sold in one group it was still, even as impressive of a group as it was, only a near set before being broken up into lots and auctioned off.

Sure, the N172 set would be the most expensive, but given that nobody has ever come close to completing it and the largest lots I have seen publicly offered have been about 20% of a complete set, I think it is a moot point. I agree that when a set is broken into individual lots, it is difficult to gauge the price for the set as a whole, but I also think that offering 522 of a 524 card set is close enough to give us a sense of what the set might bring. 99.8% complete is pretty darn close. It would be interesting to see how the 14 CJ set and the T206 Harris set would do next to each other in an auction format if both were offered as complete sets.

I agree here as well. The highest public price paid for a full set of baseball cards was the 1914 Cracker Jack set. I also agree that the N172 set would be the highest paid price for a set if one would ever be sold, but more than likely as the Harris T206 set it would be sold broken up for max value or go to a private collector and we will never know about it. Never the less the highest paid on record for a full set to my knowleadge is the 1914 Cracker Jack set.

i have always believed that when discussing complete sets in high grade, that the complete set is actually worth more than the sum of it's parts.

that being said, i agree that the n172 set would (if ever reasonably close to complete) would be king.

but, if the harris collection was sold intact.....maybe the final price would have been closer to 2 mil.

that's just my opinion.

Hey Jim, There are a few people that are close to a full set of N172 players. So I do think it is a good point. It is just that we have never seen one sell at auction or in a public forum. I think it would be great to see some of these great sets sold as sets and keeped that way.

I believe the 1914 CJ set is still listed on the SGC website and if that set in its current condidtion(SGC slabbed) where auctioned off now it would probably fetch 7 figures.

There are other graded(public) sets that could fetch over $500k if sold through an auction format:

From PSA's Registry -
Peter Thomas's T204 set
Probably the top 5 T206 sets listed
Smith's T205 set
Louchios's D304 set
Top 2 T3 sets
Top 3 1915 CJ sets
Top 2 1933 Goudey

Of course you would have to have big money buyer's for these to sell but if strategically listed at the right time I feel in todays market all of these sets could break $500k.

BTW, how can Louchios's D304 set not be in PSA'a HOF?!! Whatever that means....

Here is the final answer to the test - I believe that if I had a complete set consisting of every old judge card graded a psa 10 or an sgc 100, it would sell for more than any other set you could put together regardless of grade.
