Jeez, and here I was stoked about finally completing the 1973 Topps set I started collected as a six year old...

As for 2009, '52 Bowman or bust.

I don't think I completed anything in 2008, card-wise. Still working on 1916 Big Heads, D303s,T209-1s and whatever I see that I like....there never seems to be an end....

Well I am one card away on 2 sets

1915 Cracker Jack, just need that Cobb

1900 T203 Mayo Cut Plug Baseball Comics, just need A Great Game.

I am sure I will finish both in 09.

The true test for 2009 will be the Boston Store set I am working on. About half way there but the big name HOF are going to be expensive and hard to locate. Anyone want to let got of a Jackson due LMK :-D.

James G

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

In 2008 I was finally able to pull the trigger on a Jackson and complete the E90-1 American Caramel set. No easy feat..

In 2009 will continue to work on a T206 Hof potrait sub set. This is what kinda fuels my fire for now.

I completed a subset in 2008 that I began collecting in 1989. I now have all twenty-eight 1887 Old Judge poses of the World Champion Detroit Wolverines (a complete team set). This required obnoxious bidding at times as some of the poses have only surfaced once over the last five years (the time period over which I collected most of them). I was thinking of posting the pics in another thread.

As for 2009, no more "subsets", just add to the Detroit collection with more upgrades, cabinets, 1888 N172s, etc.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

I completed the T206 Southern League subset in 2008, though still have some upgrading I want to do (Manion, Paige, and Helm are still PSA 1s). Looking to make the average weight of the subset around a 3.5 in 2009.

I've just about finished the T206. (519 of 524 .. need Wagner, Doyle and three commons)

1941 Playball

Salutation Exhibits, concluded by acquiring the ugliest (and only) Rizzo I've ever seen.

'52 Topps

Goals for '09:

'34 Goudey

Diamond Stars

And a SET that has nothing to do with this board... single signed baseballs of every player on the 1960 Pirates. Murtaugh is difficult because he's often found to be a clubhouse signature; Hoak is impossible. As is, apparently, Gene Baker.

A set I started this year that I hope to complete next year is a T206 Hall of Fame set minus Wagner and Plank. Also, not vintage, but I have been working on a Don Mattingly basic set that I started just over a year ago.

Started collecting HOF'ers portraits last year and completed that adventure. Now collecting all of the HOF'ers cards....have 74 and need about 20. Also keeping an eye out for all the cards listed in the SMR report magazine. didn't think it would take this long but i keep chipping away at it.

I didn't finish anything this year, but am getting very close to my 1921 Exhibits set. Next year's goals are to finish that set (at least before I begin upgrading), and continue my T206 HOF Portrait subset.

in 2008 the tally was/is 0 for me...as I don't collect sets...only little type subsets.

In 2009 I hope to complete my E94 basic set of 6 for murray...and I hope to add an e97 color nichols...phil variation to complete this e97 type subset. I hope to add a few t206 backs I no longer have as well.

in 2008 I completed:
T205 Cubs team set
T206 Cubs team set
T207 Cubs team set (minus the Ward Miller, but this is complete!)

For 2009,
Modern/Post-war:
I will be focusing on finishing my PSA player set goals for a few of my favorite modern players, including Ron Cey, Kirby Puckett, Rickey Henderson, Ozzie Smith, and Eddie Mathews

Vintage:
1) I hope to find examples of Handley PCL issues, such as Hage's Dairy
2) start pecking away at T202 Cubs
3) Musial 48 Leaf in EX-MT
4) Add 1 or 2 big cards, like my first Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, or Greenberg (Another cousin, but very distant, & thru marriage)
5) find money for all of the above!

Good luck to everyone in 09!

Congrats to all on some amazing sets !!!!!!

2008: Nothing baseball, but very, very pleased with completion of boxing E77 in nice, consistant, collector's grade.

2009: Two new goals to be started: T210-1 (SAL) complete, and D311 all Vernon, with one example from each other teams.

I picked these because I know I like the issues, AND, I have never seen the majority of the cards. So, I figure nearly each pick-up will have double the thrill !!!!

Kind of swore off set collecting but that hasn't worked out entirely. Did not complete any sets in 2008 but made good progress on my 1933-34 WWG Ice Kings set. Seventy-two card set, need 13 more. See 'em here:
http://tinyurl.com/5rxkal pw=aloha. Started an E93 American Caramel set a few months ago. Got some of the biggies out of the way (Wagner, Cobb, Matty, Young) but expect to have a tough time finding some of the rest. Cards at: http://tinyurl.com/6nn5x6 pw=aloha. I like the idea some of you have of collecting subsets. I have been collecting Vancouver & Victoria Obaks at a glacial pace. Will work on that in 2009 I suppose. Completed a subset of T205 Giants a few years ago; might do the same for the T206s, am part of the way there.

Finished a few of the W529 subsets, got most of the Carmelos Las Estrellas boxers. Other than that, it was bits and pieces or single card issues. I did put a lot of effort into the Salutations Exhibits set this year and made good headway. Those SP's are very, very tough...

YOU COMPLETE ME!!!

Thanks to Scott Brockelman, I finally have completed my E98 Set of 30. This is the first vintage set that I have ever completed. I recently purchased the CY YOUNG with the Old Put Back from him. In a way it seemed like it took forever to complete the set, but in reality, it was only about 4 years or so, really not bad for someone on a budget. Thanks to others such as Brian McQueen, Rob Adesso, and Toby Peterson, forgive me if I left out anybody else, who helped me accomplish my goal. Also thanks to all who are on or run, LEON, the forum. It keeps me entertained and engrossed in our hobby on a daily basis, even though I'm a lurker for the most part.

Goals for 2009 and beyond....????? I really don't know yet which is what I love about this hobby....the HUNT!

Only completed 1 set and its not a beauty. Finished off the 1923 W515-2 Little Wonder Picture Series. Took me 5 years to locate the last card (#50 Maranville). Found 2 in the past 5 months. One was on eBay but wasn't gonna pay $40 for the card and $80 for the PSA slab so I went with the raw one for $20

As for 2009?......finish off the '52 Topps 1st series Red/Black backs and the '53 Topps variations

or simply to earn MONEY to buy cards?

PS. I need a new roof this coming year, I might have to sell cards to get it.. perhaps we could work out a trade?!?!? happy.gif

Default What sets did you complete in 2008? (Plus 2009 goals)

Posted By: Matthew

Completed -- T206 Southern League subset
1946-50 Remar sets

For 09, I plan to concentrate on a few regional sets that I've partially completed.

Not prewar (or even baseball), but also finished 1968 OPC CFL set, not an easy task.

Ken W:

Just curious, which cards did you pick up for Delahanty and Burkett?

Well, it looks like I did complete the 1910 Obak set this year, after all. Many thanks to Tom Hufford, who contacted me after reading on this board last week that I was down to one card needed (Lynch), and offered a very simple trade. Also, David McDonald, who traded me Ping Bodie, a scant 2 weeks after acquiring it himself, and Robert Adesso who traded me 3 of the last 10 I needed. Great board. Great people.

That's awesome Ken. Congrats on finishing up the HOF players set!!!

Do you plan on sticking with what you have or trying to upgrade some as you go along?

But for me its a big one...
1911 T205 Gold Borders!
Complete with all front variations ( I think I counted 209 cards but I must recount).
12 year quest. 70% raw, 30% graded. At last count they were in about 10 different card holder styles from slabs to screwdowns, plastic snap-its, toploaders, card savers, mylar sleeves and raw laying on my desk. Its easy to guess what my priority for 2009 is...buy more T205s and organize my others into a real collection. Maybe one raw set,one SGC slabbed.Maybe downgrade some cards and upgrade others.

I told myself I wouldn't buy any more high priced commons, so future prewar sets are out.

I will continue to buy HOF cards I don't have and no one said I couldn't buy low priced commons so my options are still pretty wide wink.gif

Happy New Year!
